Abstract:
A variable valve actuating mechanism comprising a camshaft having two concentric cam lobes that may be rotated relative to one another a summation lever engaging with both cam lobes, a valve actuating rocker pivotally connected to the summation lever and engaging with a hydraulic lash adjuster at a first end and with a valve at a second end, and a shim surface movable with the pivot axis connecting the summation lever to the valve actuating rocker for limiting the expansion of the hydraulic lash adjuster to control clearance in the rocker system, wherein, in order to reduce friction, the shim surface abuts with a stationary stop surface that forms part of a camshaft support bearing.
Abstract:
Embodiments may provide a valve train for an engine including a valve stem configured for reciprocating movement to open and close a port in a combustion chamber of the engine. The valve train may also include an elastomeric element coupled with the valve stem, and a mass may be coupled with the elastomeric element and able to move relative to the valve stem.

Abstract:
The present invention provides a shim for a valve drive mechanism which is interposed between a pad surface of a rocker arm and a stem end surface of a valve. The shim includes a ship top surface that is contacted by the pad surface. The shim top surface is rotated about a center thereof to be cut, is provided with a center hole at the center thereof, and is shaped such that the pad surface does not contact an intersection line between an inner peripheral surface of the center hole and the shim top surface when the rocker arm is swung.
Abstract:
An apparatus includes a valve and an actuator. The valve has a portion movably disposed within a valve pocket defined by a cylinder head of an engine. The valve is configured to move relative to the cylinder head a distance between a closed position and an opened position. The portion of the valve defines a flow opening that is in fluid communication with a cylinder of an engine when the valve is in the opened position. The actuator is configured to selectively vary the distance between the closed position and the opened position.
Abstract:
A poppet valve has a valve head and a valve stem. A piston is capable of reciprocating motion relative to a housing along a reciprocation axis. The piston has a valve-receiving portion for receiving therein an end portion of the valve stem. A cotter secures the valve stem to the piston. A cap is disposed around the valve-receiving portion. A cap lateral portion extends away from the cap end portion in the direction of the valve head. The valve-receiving portion is held between the cap end portion and the cap lateral portion in a direction parallel to the reciprocation axis. At least part of the cap lateral portion is angled toward the reciprocation axis. The part of the cap lateral portion is closer to the reciprocation axis than at least part of the valve-receiving portion. A method of assembling a valve assembly is also described.
Abstract:
An internal combustion engine incorporating rest cylinders is provided which does not need a high response performance when operating a throttle valve and which can eliminate engine output variations as the number of operable cylinders changes. In the internal combustion engine, some of a plurality of cylinders is configured to rest during normal operation of the engine. The cylinders are divided into a plurality of cylinder groups, and each of the cylinders is provided with an independent throttle valve. An ECU for increasing the number of operative cylinder groups according to at least the throttle handgrip opening is provided. Also provided are motors for bringing the throttle valves in the cylinder in the rest state into a fully closed state on the basis of each cylinder group, a throttle valve position sensor, and the like.
Abstract:
An internal combustion engine having cylinders capable of selectively resting during engine operation is capable of eliminating step increases in engine output when the number of operative cylinders is changed. The internal combustion engine includes a plurality of cylinders divided into two or more groups, at least some of the cylinders being restable. A throttle valve of each of the cylinders is independently operable on the basis of the group to which the cylinder belongs, and the number of resting cylinders is controlled according to the throttle grip opening. The throttle valve opening is different between the groups, except for the full opening condition and the full closure condition of the throttle valve, and an ECU is provided for opening the throttle valve of the next cylinder group before the throttle valve opening of the former cylinder group reaches the full opening condition.
Abstract:
A valve system for an engine including a valve resting mechanism provided between an engine valve and a valve lifter supported by a cylinder head. The valve resting mechanism can place the engine valve into a resting state. The valve resting mechanism has a pin holder which includes a sliding hole having an axis perpendicular to the axis of a valve lifter, and an insertion hole for allowing a valve stem to pass therethrough. The pin holder is slidably fitted in the valve lifter. A slide pin is slidably fitted in the sliding hole, with a hydraulic force and a spring force applied to both ends of the slide pin. A containing hole is coaxially connectable to the insertion hole, and a rotation stopping means for stopping axial rotation of the slide pin is provided between the pin holder and the slide pin.
