CONSTITUTION: A current mode is converted into a multi input mode which activates a touch screen in a virtual area while key input is maintained in a touch screen unit(230, 240). Abstract: PURPOSE: A device and a method for inputting a character of a portable terminal are provided to output a vowel character corresponding to the touch movement direction during input operation if character data are inputted. CONSTITUTION: A touch sensor(104) senses the character data input, and processes the operation corresponding to the input. A coordinate confirmation unit(102) measures the position of the inputted touch by using the touch information inputted with the touch sensor. If the touch operation is sensed among the touch input mode, a controller(100) combines the two kinds of character data by using the generated position where the touch input happens.
