Abstract: An apparatus in which the presence of toner particles is detected. The apparatus includes a detector member (60) adapted to be charged by the toner particles (68) in contact therewith. A signal is transmitted in response to the detector member being charged to indicate the presence of toner particles in contact with the member. The signal is used to control the dispensing of toner particles from a hopper (66) so as to maintain the required thickness of toner particles in a wedge-shaped layer (62) in the region of contact of a layer of toner particles on a magnetic brush (32) with a photoreceptor (10).

Abstract: An apparatus which develops a latent image with marking particles. The apparatus includes a developer roller which transports the marking particles closely adjacent to the latent image. As the marking particles are deposited on the latent image, the developer roller senses the charge thereon. In response to the sensed charge of the marking particles, additional marking particles are dispensed into the chamber of the housing for subsequent use by the developer roller.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for achieving optimum optical contrast for detecting registration marks in a multicolor print-black-first, color electrophotographic printing machine. A black mask having voids in the shape of a registration mark is formed on the photoreceptor (10). A high contrast color is then overwritten on the mask and in the voids, forming marks which indicate the position of the black image. A delay time measurement between a registration mark of a non-black color and the non-black color in the voids of the black mask will provide the relative registration between the black and non-black color imagers as those registration marks on the photoreceptor pass a marks-on-belt sensor. A second method utilizes a registration mark imaged by each imager of the color printing machine, but all of the latent image registration marks are developed with a single non-black color toner. A mark-on-belt sensor is then used to determine the relative position of the various color imagers and to send signals to the controller to make appropriate corrections.

Abstract: An acoustic scavengeless assist (ASA) development apparatus (40, 42, 44), forms part of a multicolor image reproduction machine (Fig. 1). The (ASA) development apparatus includes a biased vibratory section (46) having a piezoelectric member (85) and a donor member (88), as well as, a development electrode section (59), for presenting toner particles to latent electrostatic images for image development. The donor member (88) is positioned within the reproduction machine and forms a development nip with a latent image bearing surface (10) of a photoreceptor of the reproduction machine. Importantly, the biased vibratory section has at least a first conductive electrode (67) formed therein adjacent to said piezoelectric member (85) for effecting controlled vibratory toner release from the donor member (88), and a first bias for biasing the at least first conductive electrode. The development electrode section includes a set of second conductive electrodes (66) and a second bias (70) therefor, and is located between the at least first electrode (67) and the latent image bearing surface (10), for enhancing toner particle release from the donor member (88), and powder cloud formation within the development nip for quality image development.

Abstract: The unit is constructed as an integrated in-line developer unit (100). Above each development station (E,F,G,H) is a toner dispenser (102,104,106.108) separated by common walls (122,124,126,128). Each dispenser and developer unit contains a different colour of toner. The dispensers deliver toner to the developer units. Toner moving auger (140) is controlled by a toner moving controller (141). The toner auger passes through the common walls and has a toner moving section (142,144,146,148) in each dispenser, all the sections rotate when the auger is actuated. The wall channels have seals (162,164,166,168) to allow the auger to pass through the walls. The auger sections move the toner to dispenser openings (172,174,176,178). A gating device (180) controls the flow of toner from the dispenser to the developing units. The gating has openings (182,184,186,188) aligned with toner dispenser openings to allow toner from toner dispenser to developer units.
