    Abstract: Purification of creatine (I) involves adding the (I) to be purified, in anhydrous form, to a saturated aqueous solution of (I) monohydrate, so that the anhydrous (I) is dissolved with hydration, then separating the crystals of (I) monohydrate which precipitate from the solution. An Independent claim is also included for the preparation of (I) monohydrate, by: (a) reacting sarcosine with an guanylating agent in an aqueous medium, so that crude (I) monohydrate is precipitated; (b) separating the crude product form the medium; (c) optionally washing; (d) converting the product into anhydrous (I); (e) adding the anhydrous (I) to a saturated aqueous solution of (I) monohydrate, so that the anhydrous (I) is dissolved with hydration; (f) separating the crystals of (I) monohydrate which precipitate from the solution; and (g) utilizing the aqueous solution at least partially as aqueous medium in step (a) and/or washing liquid in step (c).

    Abstract: A process for the production of pyridine-2-carboxylic acid-(1-4C) alkyl ester compounds comprises acid hydrolysis of a 2-cyanopyridine derivative with an anhydrous inorganic acid or its anhydride in the presence of water and a 1-4C alcohol. An equimolar quantity of water is added before the addition of the acid or anhydride. A process for the production of pyridine-2-carboxylic acid-(1-4C) alkyl ester compounds (I) of formula (1) comprises acid hydrolysis of a 2-cyanopyridine derivative (II) of formula (2) with an anhydrous acid or its anhydride in the presence of water and a 1-4C alcohol. An equimolar quantity of water is added to the compound (II) before the addition of the acid or anhydride. R = H, 1-12C alkyl or alkoxy; and n = 0-4. Independent claims are included for: (1) a process for the production of terpyridines of formula (3) involves: (i) condensation of a pyridine-2-carboxylic acid-(1-4C)-alkyl ester (I) with acetone in an aprotic solvent in the presence of an alkali- or alkaline earth (1-4C)-alcoholate; (ii) reaction of the resulting 1,5-bis(2-pyridyl)pentan-1,3,5-trione compound of formula (4) with ammonia or ammonium salts of formula (5) with removal of the water of reaction using a 1-4C alcohol as a driving agent; and (iii) chlorination of the resulting 2,6-bis(2-pyridyl)-(1H) pyridone compound of formula (6) using POCl3 and toluene, o-xylene, m-xylene and/or p-xylene; (2) a processes for the production of the 1,5-bis(2-pyridyl)-pentan-1,3,5 trione compounds of formula (4) and 2,6-bis(2-pyridyl)-4(1H) pyridone compounds of formula (6). Y = acid anion; Z = NH if the reaction step (ii) is using ammonia, or NH2 if the reaction step (ii) is using (NH4)qY; and q = valency of acid.
