Abstract: A fast and efficient packet transmission system and method for transmitting and routing packets through a digital communications network (101, 102, 103, 104, 105 and 106) which utilizes both variable length packets and fixed length packets, or cells, for achieving maximum efficiency and minimum delay in the digital communications network. Network efficiency is maximized by using variable length packets to transmit information across transmission lines (102) and network speed is maximized by using cells to route information to their intended destinations.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for providing a reliable means to perform handoff from a code division multiple access (CDMA) system using a pilot signal to an alternative access technique system. Simple pilot box circuitry (350) is added to a set of border base stations (C2A - C2R). The border base stations (C2A C2R) are base stations which operate only in the alternative access technique and which have coverage areas which are contiguous with coverage areas of CDMA operation base stations. The mobile unit monitors for the pilot signal from the border base stations (C2A - C2R) in the same manner as it monitors for pilot signals from the CDMA operation base stations (C1A - C1s). When the mobile unit detects the pilot signal corresponding to a border base station (C2A - C2R), it notifies a system controller (202) in accordance with standard operation. The system controller (202) is aware that the pilot signal corresponds to a border base station (C2A - C2R) and thus triggers a hard handoff process to the alternative access technique system in response thereto.

Abstract: A system for reducing receiver power consumption in communication system having a transmitter and one or more receivers schedules periodic messages in "slots." Each receiver is assigned a slot during which it monitors the transmissions. The transmitter transmits messages to the receiver only during the assigned slots. The receiver is in an "active state" during its assigned slot. It may remain in the active state after its assigned slot if the message requires the receiver to perform additional actions. During the "inactive state," which is the time period between successive occurrences of its assigned slot, the receiver may perform any action not requiring coordination with the transmitter. It may conserve power during this time by removing power from one or more components such as those used for monitoring the transmissions. At a time during the inactive state shortly before the assigned slot, the receiver applies power to these components and performs initializations. Such initializations may include reacquiring a pilot channel signal to which the receiver may synchronize itself if its timing signals have drifted out of synchronization with those of the transmitter during the preceding inactive state.

Abstract: The invention provides a system and method for testing signal transmission quality wihin a digital communication system and may be incorporated within a digital cellular communication system in which information is exchanged over spread spectrum communication channels. A test sequence of digital data transmitted over the communication channel is received at a receiving station, within which is also generated a replica of the test sequence of digital data. The accuracy of transmission over the communication channel is then determined by comparing the replica of the test sequence of digital data to the test sequence of data received over the communication channel. The invention allows the test sequence of digital data to be transmitted at one of a set of known data rates, with the received station being disposed to identify the data rate associated with each test sequence of digital data. In order to simulate the transmission of, for example, voice data, the system may be configured such that each test sequence of digital data is generated in accordance with a pseudorandom process.

Abstract: The invention relates to a communication system in which transmission takes place according to a format which permits different types of data to be combined and transmitted within a single transmission. The novel feature is that the communication system transmits variable length frames of data in packets, and that a data combining and transmission sub-system (14, 16, 18, 20) is provided so that when a frame of data does not require a complete packet for transmission, the data combining sub-system combines the frame of data with additional data to provide a complete packet. The data combining sub-system comprises input means for receiving the frame of data and the additional data and for combining the frame of data and the additional data to provide a complete packet responsive to a control signal, and control means for providing the control signal.

Abstract: An apparatus and method for adding and removing a target base station from a network of base stations, which includes base stations adjacent the target base station. The apparatus is comprised of two attenuators: a first for setting an artificial receive noise power level and a second for setting a transmit level. The transmit level determines the forward link coverage area of the base station. The artificial noise level sets the reverse link coverage area of the base station. When a base station is added, initially the transmit power is low and the artificial receive noise power is high such that the forward and reverse link coverage areas are collocated in close proximity to the base station. As the base station blossoms into full operation, the artificial receive noise power is decreased and the transmit level is increased such that the two coverage areas of the base station remain balanced as the coverage areas expand. When a base station is to be removed from a system, the same attenuators are used to wilt the two coverage areas in unison as the power level transmitted from the base station decreases.

Abstract: A method and apparatus providing softer handoff of a mobile unit (90) between sectors (50, 70, and 80) of a common base station (60). A sectorized base station (60) comprises a set of demodulation elements (240A - 204N). Each demodulation element (240A - 204N) may be assigned to a signal from one of a plurality of sectors. The output of the demodulators (240A - 204N) are combined before the decoding process independent of the sector from which the data originated. This configuration provides improved output data reliability, more stable power control, and more efficient use of resources at the base station.
