Abstract: The invention relates to a process for the preparation of methyl formate by reacting methanol with carbon monoxide at a pressure of from 0.5 to 10 MPa abs. and a temperature of from 50 to 150° C. in the presence of a metal alkoxide as catalyst in a reactor, in which a gas stream is withdrawn from the reactor, entrained methyl formate is removed from this gas stream by condensation, and all or some of the remaining gas stream is returned to the reactor as circulating-gas stream and a mean gas superficial velocity of from 1 to 20 cm/s is set in at least one region of the reactor in which the gas flows essentially in one direction.

Abstract: Formic acid-formates are produced by (a) partial hydrolysis of methyl formate (MF) with water, (b) distillation to give (S1) formic acid and water, (c) conversion of the other product from (b) (mainly MF) into a stream (S2) containing formate and water by reaction with aqueous strong base and distillation of methanol, and (d) combination of (S1) with (S2). A method for the production of formic acid-formates (I) involves: (a) partial hydrolysis of methyl formate (MF) with water; (b) distillation to give a stream (S1) containing formic acid and water; (c) conversion of the MF- and possibly methanol-containing stream from (b) into a formate- and water-containing stream (S2) by (i) reaction with a basic compound of an acid with a pKa value of at least 3 in presence of water followed by (ii) removal of methanol by distillation; and (d) combination of streams (S1) and (S2). An Independent claim is also included for apparatus for the production of (I), comprising: (A) a reactor for the hydrolysis of MF; (B) a distillation column for separating a stream containing MF, formic acid, methanol and water; (C) a column for the hydrolysis of MF with a basic compound with removal of methanol by distillation (with an inlet for the base above the inlet for the product from (B)); and (D) a column connected to the bottom of (B) for removing water from the stream containing formic acid and water.

Abstract: Acrolein or acrylic acid is prepared by catalyzing partial gas phase oxidation of propene, where a starting reaction gas mixture having propylene and molecular oxygen reactants and inert molecular nitrogen and propane diluent gasses is conducted at elevated temperature through a fixed catalyst bed whose active composition is a multimetal oxide having molybdenum, iron and bismuth. Preparation of acrolein or acrylic acid involves catalyzing partial gas phase oxidation of propene, where a starting reaction gas mixture having propylene and molecular oxygen reactants and the inert molecular nitrogen and propane diluent gasses and having the molecular oxygen and the propylene in a molar oxygen;C 3H 6 ratio of >=1 is conducted at elevated temperature through a fixed catalyst bed whose active composition is a multimetal oxide having molybdenum, iron and bismuth based on its total volume of 6-9 vol.% propylene, 8-18 vol.% molecular oxygen. 6-30 vol.% propane and 32-72 vol.% molecular nitrogen. The molar ratio V 1 of propane in starting reaction gas mixture to propylene in starting reaction gas mixture is 1-4. The molar V 2 of molecular nitrogen present in starting reaction gas mixture to molecular oxygen in starting reaction the mixture is 2-6, and the molar ratio of the molecular oxygen in starting reaction gas mixture to propylene in starting reaction mixture is 1.3-2.4.

Abstract: Procedimiento para la obtención de cloro mediante oxidación catalítica en fase gaseosa de cloruro de hidrógeno en un lecho fijo de catalizador con los pasos: a) se ponen a disposición una corriente gaseosa de alimentación que contiene cloruro de hidrógeno I y una corriente gaseosa de alimentación que contiene oxígeno II; b) se alimentan a una zona de oxidación la corriente gaseosa de alimentación I, la corriente gaseosa de alimentación II, en caso dado una recirculación Ia que contiene cloruro de hidrógeno, en caso dado una recirculación IIa que contiene oxígeno y una recirculación III, y se oxida cloruro de hidrógeno para dar cloro en presencia de un catalizador dispuesto en lecho fijo, obteniéndose una corriente gaseosa de producto IV que contiene cloro, oxígeno no reaccionado, cloruro de hidrógeno no reaccionado y vapor de agua; c) se extrae la recirculación III con la corriente gaseosa de producto IV, y se devuelven a la zona de oxidación, quedando una corriente gaseosa de producto IVa.
