    Abstract: A process for the preparation of acrylic acid by:(a) preparation of a gaseous product mixture which essentially has the composition of a reaction mixture of catalytic gas-phase oxidation of C3-alkanes, C3-alkenes, C3-alkanols and/or C3-alkanals and/or intermediates thereof to acrylic acid, which comprises(b) condensation of the gaseous product mixture,(c) crystallization of the acrylic acid from the solution obtained in stage (b), with partial evaporation of the solution under reduced pressure,(d) isolation of the resulting crystals from the mother liquor,(e) recycling of at least a part of the mother liquor from stage (d) to stage (b) and(f) recycling of at least a part of the evaporated solution from stage (c) to stage (b).

    Abstract: In the production of acrylic acid by gas phase partial oxidation of propane or propene and/or acrolein with oxygen (O2) using heterogeneous catalysis, in which a substance inhibiting free radical polymerization of acrylic acid is added in the separating column, the inhibitor is an aqueous solution containing dissolved N-oxyl radicals as the only polymerization inhibitor. In the production of acrylic acid by gas phase partial oxidation of propane or propene and/or acrolein with oxygen (O2) using heterogeneous catalysis, in which a substance inhibiting free radical polymerization of acrylic acid is added in the separating column, the inhibitor is an aqueous solution containing dissolved N-oxyl radicals as the only polymerization inhibitor. Partial oxidation is carried out at elevated temperature in the presence of an inert diluent gas on catalyst in the solid aggregate state. The hot product gas mixture is cooled directly with a high-boiling liquid (quench liquid 1) at the cooling limit temperature. This is circulated, optionally through an indirect cooling heat exchanger, and part is discharged continuously as outlet for the highest boiling compounds. The cooled product gas mixture is passed into a column with separating inserts and 2 collecting plates, below the inserts, and rises through the column. Part of the high boiling compounds condenses on the plate below the inserts and part of this is used as quench liquid 1, whilst the rest is cooled or heated in an indirect heat exchanger and returned to the lower half of the column, between the 2 plates. Acrylic acid of purity \- 95 wt. % is taken as middle fraction from the second plate at a side port and purified by crystallization. At least part of the mother liquor from crystallization is returned to the column between the 2 plates. The low-boiling fraction is taken as gas stream at the top and cooled directly with quench liquid 2 to condense water and constituents less volatile than water. Part of the condensate (acid water) is recycled to the top of the column to increase the separation capacity, whilst the rest is cooled indirectly in an external heat exchanger and used as quench liquid 2. Constituents more volatile than water are discharged as gas and optionally recycled to gas phase oxidation as diluent gas.

    Abstract: The invention relates to a method for purifying acrylic acid or methacrylic acid by crystallization and distillation, which consists of the following steps: (a) crystallization of a mixture containing the acrylic acid or methacrylic acid, resulting in formation of a product crystallizate enriched with acrylic acid or methacrylic acid and a mother liquor; (b) distillation of at least part of the mother liquor obtained under step (a) to obtain a distillation bottom which is at least partly extracted and an overhead; (c) crystallization of at least part of the overhead obtained under step (b) so as to obtain a crystallization residue which is extracted and a crystallizate; and (d) recirculation of the crystallizate obtained under step (c) into the crystallization process (a).
