    Abstract: A scanner determines whether a target is a bar code symbol and, if so, whether that symbol is one-dimensional. For two-dimensional symbols, the scanner aligns a scanning pattern with the symbol and expands the scanning pattern to reach only to the top and bottom edge of the symbol, not beyond. The scanner also has a microprocessor-control scanning engine that uses a coil to drive a scanning element and pick up feed back signals from the scanning element. A pulse-width-modulated regulator also provides fast and efficient operation for driving the coil. The scanning engine can also be designed to generate a pattern that precesses across the target, and a powerful interface to the scanning engine allows decoding and control logic to work efficiently with and independently of the scan engine.

    Abstract: A compact assembly for electro-optically scanning indicia includes an oscillatable component operative for focusing, and for sweeping, a light beam across the indicia and, optionally, for correcting for scan aberration. A laser diode for emitting the beam is inserted into a central opening surrounded by an electromagnetic coil to conserve space. A magnet on the component interacts with the coil to effect oscillation. A floating flexure returns the component to an equilibrium position.

    Abstract: An optical scanning module has orthogonally-mounted first and second circuit boards (416,418) which carry circuitry that operates together to produce the signals necessary for operation of the module, and to process electrical signals from a reflected light detector. In a preferred embodiment, scanning of the light beam is achieved by reflecting the beam from a mirror (159) which is mounted to a support (103) which itself is mounted for reciprocal oscillation on leaf springs (121,123). Oscillation is provided by the interaction of a permanent magnet (109) on the support (103), and a stationary electro-magnet (133). The invention also encompasses systems for scanning the beam simultaneously in two orthogonal directions, and for producing a moving zig-zag scanning pattern.

    Abstract: A bar code reader has an integrated scanning component module which is mountable on a printed circuit board. In one embodiment, the module may include the digitizer/decoder electronics, enabling the module to be used with a generic PCB. In some embodiments, the module includes a high speed optical scanning arrangement having an optical element which extends longitudinally of a flexible member, secured at one end. In other embodiments, the invention extends to a hand-held optical scanner having a scanning assembly, detector and data transmission coupling all mounted to a common printed circuit board, preferably located within a manually-graspable handle. In yet a further embodiment, an abuse-detector or accelerometer is provided for determining when the device is exposed to deceleration above a predetermined limit, and optionally for automatically shutting down applications programs and for providing a black-box-record of a short time frame before the device was exposed to an unexpected shock. Preferably, the reader is shock protected by a thermo-plastic elastomer housing section. An outgoing light beam is directed at a non-orthogonal angle relative to the PCB.

    Abstract: An integrated optical module for an optical scanner has a lens (24) spaced from a vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) (28) by a spacer (62). The module, in an alternative embodiment, may include a wafer frame (12), a suspended mirror (14) mounted for oscillation on the frame, a wafer substrate (108) bonded beneath the frame and a wafer cover (109) bonded above the frame. The cover includes a mirror travel stop (116) to protect the mirror against shock. A VCSEL mounted to the wafer cover produces a beam which is shaped and deflected by a diffractive optical element (22,24) onto the oscillating mirror. The reflected beam passes out of the module toward an indicia to be read. Large numbers of such devices may be fabricated relatively cheaply using wafer-scale processing and assembly technology. Three large wafers (1100,1102,1104) are fabricated corresponding respectively to arrays of substrates, frames and covers. The large wafers are bonded together in a sandwich arrangement, and are then diced to produce the individual scan modules. The modules may provide either one-dimensional or two-dimensional scanning.

    Abstract: An optical code reader (12) is provided including imaging circuitry (10) having an array (106) of photo sensing devices (200) capable of sensing ligh t incident on the array and outputting a plurality of pixel signals (502) corresponding to the sensed light. The reader further includes control and logic circuitry for receiving a subset of the plurality of pixel signals, processing the received subset of the plurality of pixel signals for determining if the received pixel signals meet at least one predetermined condition, and outputting a selection control signal in accordance with the processing results. A focus analysis software module executable by the contr ol and logic circuitry determines the focus quality of the received pixel signals. A selector control software module executable by the control and logic circuitry generates a selection control signal in accordance with the determined focus quality of the received pixel signals. Selector circuitry selectively enables the imaging circuitry to output selected pixel signals o f the plurality of pixel signals in accordance with the selection control sign al.
