Abstract:
A method of treating diarrhea or an inflammatory condition of the gut in a subject comprises administering a therapeutically effective amount of beta-hydroxy-beta-methylbutyrate (HMB) or a salt thereof to a subject in need thereof. A method of treating secretory diarrhea in a subject comprises administering a therapeutically effective amount of HMB or a salt thereof to a subject exhibiting one or more of the following symptoms: loss of fluids from the gut, loss of electrolytes from the gut, dehydration, or inflammation of the intestinal tract.
Abstract:
Methods for maintaining or increasing bodyweight in a subject susceptible to unintentional weight loss are provided. The methods include a step of administering at least one serving per day of a composition including 20 to 2000 mg of a decaffeinated green tea extract per serving to the subject.
Abstract:
Nutritional powder products exhibiting better taste and bioavailability of micronutrients are produced by avoiding certain ingredient combinations in the blended liquid mixture which is spray dried during manufacture. Particular ingredients which are omitted from this blended liquid mixture so as to avoid these combinations are added back by dry blending these omitted ingredients with the base powder produced by spray drying.
Abstract:
Methods of decreasing muscle function decline and improving muscle function in a subject are provided. The methods utilize an effective amount of epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCg) to increase the level of muscle vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGF), to decrease myostatin levels, or both, and thereby decrease muscle function decline or improve muscle function. The EGCg may be provided as part of a nutritional composition.
Abstract:
A method of forming a heat-treated liquid nutritional composition having a neutral pH and comprising a water-insoluble plant flavonoid comprises providing an aqueous liquid nutritional composition having a pH of from about 6 to about 7.5 and comprising protein, fat, carbohydrate, and water-insoluble plant flavonoid, homogenizing the liquid nutritional composition at a pressure of at least about 2000 psi, and heat treating the liquid nutritional composition. A heat-treated liquid nutritional composition having a pH of from about 6 to about 7.5 comprises a water-insoluble plant flavonoid, protein, fat and carbohydrate. At least about 75 wt % of the water-insoluble plant flavonoid remains suspended throughout the liquid nutritional composition after two months of storage at room temperature.
Abstract:
Compositions and methods for enhancing the regenerative capacity of an individual are provided. The compositions include, and the methods provide, a combination of an effective amount of epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCg) and an effective amount of beta-hydroxy-beta-methylbutyrate (HMB) to decrease the level of intramuscular FGF2, to enhance the regenerative capacity of muscle, or both.
Abstract:
Insulin resistance biomarkers and related methods of using the biomarkers are provided. The biomarkers may be blood biomarkers and include C-peptide, Insulin-Like Growth Factor- Binding Protein 2 (IGFBP-2), and Leptin. Also provided is a method of reducing the effect of prolonged physical inactivity on insulin resistance in a subject who is experiencing prolonged physical inactivity, or who is expected to experience prolonged physical inactivity in the near future.
Abstract:
Nutritional compositions that include a combination of Curcumin and epigallocatechin gallate (EGCg) are provided. The nutritional compositions may be formulated as low glycemic index nutritional compositions. The nutritional compositions may be administered to an individual, particularly an insulin resistant, pre-diabetic, or diabetic individual, to preserve muscle mass and decrease fat deposition, thereby improving overall body composition leading to increased strength and functionality as well as improved blood glucose control and insulin sensitivity.
Abstract:
Methods of preserving muscle strength in a subject during a period of muscle disuse are provided. Methods of preserving muscle strength in a subject during a period of muscle disuse and a subsequent period of muscle recovery are also provided. The methods include administering a composition including β-hydroxy-β-methylbutyrate and green tea extract to the subject during at least a portion of the period of muscle disuse and, optionally, during at least a portion of the period of muscle recovery. The composition may also include leucine or another leucine metabolite, such as α-ketoisocaproic acid or α-hydroxyisocaproic acid.
Abstract:
A liquid nutritional composition includes a source of epigallocatechin gallate and at least one of a source of protein, a source of carbohydrate, and a source of fat. The liquid nutritional composition includes gallocatechin gallate and epigallocatechin gallate in a ratio of about 1:20 to about 1:0.60. At least a portion of the gallocatechin gallate is formed by epimerization of the epigallocatechin gallate as a result of application of heat to the liquid nutritional composition. Methods of making the liquid nutritional composition are also provided.
