Abstract: Prodn. of new acrylic, asymmetrical monoacetals (I) of aromatic diketones (II) of the formulae A'-CO-C(OR')(OR")-A" (I) and A'-CO-CO-A" (II) (where A' and A" are aromatic gps. and R' and R" are ppt. substd. 1-12C hydrocarbyl gps.) involves reacting (II) with an alkylating agent of the formula (R')nX and an alcoholate of the formula (R"O)mMe (in which n and m are 1, 2 or 3, X is a mono- to tri-basic acid gp. and Me is a main gp. I-III metal) in an organic solvent (III). (I) are used as photoinitiators for photocurable compsn., e.g. for the photopolymerisation of olefinically unsatd. monomer (mixts) and the photocure of coating compsns. based on unsatd. polyester resins and compsns. used for photoresists or photopolymer printing plates. Rapid polymerisation or cure occurs, giving scratch-proof coatings with min. discoloration. In an example, benzil methyl benzyl monoacetal was prepd. by reacting benzil with benzyl chloride and NaOMe in dimethylformamide at room temp.

The coating compsn. consists of (A) 99.9-20% of a reaction prod. from (a) opt. (partially)etherified amine-HCHO condensates, and (b) acrylic and/or methacrylic cpds. contg. OH or NH2 gps, in amts. of 1/3-1 mol. acrylic cpds/equiv. CH2-O-gps. in the amine-HCHO condensate; (B) 0-60% of copolymerisable organic cpds. liq. at room temp; (c) 0-80% of pigments or fillers; (D) 0-20% of organic auxiliary prods. usual in paints and varnishes; (E) 0-50% of other unsatd. polymerisable binders; and (F) 0.1-20% of a photo-inductor system. The binders are cheap, easily prepd. and are rapidly cured. The compsns. may be applied to wood, metal, paper or synthetic resins and may also be used as mastics or printing inks.

Abstract: Acylphosphine compounds of the formula I where X is oxygen, sulfur or an electron pair, R1 is R4 or OR4, R2 is -OM, where M is a monovalent cation, R3 is aryl which is substituted at least at the two positions ortho to the carbonyl group, and R4 is hydrogen, alkyl or aryl, are very effective photoinitiators for photopolymerizable materials, such as coating compositions, finishes, printing inks, unsaturated polyesters, recording media and preferably aqueous polymer dispersions or solutions.

Abstract: Acylphosphine oxide compounds of the general formula where R1 is alkyl, cyclohexyl, cyclopentyl, aryl which is unsubstituted or substituted by halogen, alkyl or alkoxy, or an S-containing or N-containing five-membered or six-membered heterocyclic radical, R2 has one of the meanings of R1 (but R1 and R2 may be identical or different) or is alkoxy, aryloxy or aralkoxy, or R1 and R2 together form a ring and R3 is an at least disubstituted phenyl, pyridyl, furyl or thienyl radical which carries, at least at the two carbon atoms adjacent to the linkage point of the carbonyl group, the substituents A and B, which may be identical or different, and each of which is alkyl, alkoxy or alkylthio of 1 to 6 carbon atoms, cycloalkyl of 5 to 7 carbon atoms, phenyl or halogen, or R3 is alpha -naphthyl substituted by A and B at least in the 2- and 8-positions or is beta -naphthyl substituted by A and B at least in the 1- and 3-positions, a process for the preparation of these acylphosphine oxide compounds from acid halides of the general formula where X is chlorine or bromine, and a phosphine of the general formula and the use of these acylphosphine oxide compounds as photoinitiators in photopolymerizable surface coatings, finishes and printing inks.
