Abstract: Production of pigmented resin powders by finely dispersing dispersions of pigments in solutions of polymeric materials in at least one organic solvent in water containing a protective colloid while supplying mixing energy, and removing the solvent. A preferred method is to introduce one or more jets of water containing protective colloid at the rate of 5 to 100 m/sec into animpulse exchange chamber together with the dispersion issuing in the immediate vicinity of the orifice(s), and to remove the solvent. The method avoids crosslinking and provides pigmented resin powders of consistently reproducible color which are suitable for conventional powdered-resin coating methods.

[Also in Division B2] A binder for coating agents and printing inks comprises a copolymer of (a) styrene and/or an alkyl styrene having a C 1-4 alkyl group, (b) a hemiester of maleic acid with a C 1-10 aliphatic and/or cycloaliphatic alcohol and optionally (c) up to 10 mole per cent of at least one other copolymerizable ethylenically unsaturated monomer, which copolymer has a mol. wt. of 1000-8000 and a softening point according to Krõmer-Sarnow-Nagel (DIN 53180) of 140- 200‹ C. and has been prepared by polymerizing the monomers in aq. suspension. In examples (a) styrene and/or vinyl toluene and (b) the nbutyl hemiester of maleic acid are polymerized in an aq. mixture of polyvinyl alcohol, copper sulphate (as polymerization inhibitor) dibenzoyl peroxide and butenol (as regulator) to produce beads of the above copolymer, which may be dissolved in ethanol or nitrocellulose.

Abstract: These inks, contg. the usual additives, contain a binder component comprising a mixt. of 20-90 (wt.)% unsatd. polyester(s), 5-85% comonomer(s), which is liq. at R. temp. and has b.pt. >180 degrees C/normal press. and 1-30% initiator(s). UV cure is rapid and only slightly affected by the O2 in the air. The ink can be cured to the tack-free state with light and then cured thermally. Cured coatings up to 10 mu m thick do not disintegrate when the paper is folded. Little or no solvent is needed.
