Abstract: Acylphosphine compounds of the formula I where X is oxygen, sulfur or an electron pair, R1 is R4 or OR4, R2 is -OM, where M is a monovalent cation, R3 is aryl which is substituted at least at the two positions ortho to the carbonyl group, and R4 is hydrogen, alkyl or aryl, are very effective photoinitiators for photopolymerizable materials, such as coating compositions, finishes, printing inks, unsaturated polyesters, recording media and preferably aqueous polymer dispersions or solutions.

Abstract: Photosensitive recording materials which are suitable for the production of printing plates and relief plates and possess a photopolymerizable relief-forming layer which can be developed with water and is based on a polyvinylalcohol/monomer mixture contain, as a binder in the said layer, a polyvinylalcohol derivative which is obtained by reacting polyvinylalcohol with an acylating agent which has groups which are polymerizable by free radicals, the reaction being carried out in the heterogeneous phase, in an aprotic dispersant, using the acylating agent in an amount which corresponds to not less than twice the molar amount required to achieve the desired degree of acylation.

Abstract: Light-sensitive material for positive-working photoresists and for the prodn. of printing plates is based on a water-insol. polycondensate (I) of phenol(s) with an aldehyde and contains o-quinone-diazide-sulphonyl gps. In addn. to condensed units of phenolic cpd(s). (II), (I) also contains condensed units of phenolic cpd(s). (III) in which the OH or NH2 gps. are (partly) reacted to o-quinone-diazide-sulphonic ester or amide gps. which is strongly absorbing in the 300-400 nm wavelength range and pref. has a molar extinction coefft. epsilon >103 in that range. The material has higher sensitivity and gives faster printing plates than compsns. contg. naphthoquinone-1,2-diazide-5-sulphonic ester. It adheres well to substrates, has good film-forming properties and can be produced easily and cheaply. Pref. (I) has a mol. wt. of 1000-10000 and contains a (III) unit to every 2-15 phenolic units. In an example a light-sensitive phenolic resin was prepd. from a o-quinonediazide-sulphonic diester of 2,2',4,4'-tetrahydroxybenzophenone monoacetate, bisphenol A and HCHO.

Abstract: A photopolymerizable composition for the production of water-developable printing plates and relief plates, based on a water-soluble or water-dispersible mixture, containing a photoinitiator, of (a) one or more water-soluble or water-dispersible polymers containing copolymerized N-vinylpyrrolidone units and/or one or more polymers containing vinyl alcohol units and (b) one or more olefinically unsaturated photopolymerizable monomers, which comprises, as an additive or as the sole polymer, a water-soluble modified vinyl alcohol polymer which contains from 5 to 75, especially from 10 to 60, % by weight of chemically bonded oxyethylene units. These modified vinyl alcohol polymers are in particular oxyethylated polyvinyl alcohol or hydrolyzed graft polymers of vinyl esters onto polyethylene glycols. The compositions are easier to process into printing plates and relief plates, and exhibit a long shelf life.

Abstract: The material for positively acting photographic coatings is based on polymes having a -C-C- chain carrying O-quinonediazide-sulphonyl side-gps. These are introduced by means of a cpd. (I) having >2-OH and/or -NH2 gps. which absorbs strongly in the wavelength range of 300-400 nm and pref. has a molar extinction coefft. epsilon >103. (I) is partially converted to an o-quinonediazide sulphonic acid ester and/or amide by reaction of some of the -OH and/or -NH2 gps. The resulting prod. (II) still having >=1 -OH or -NH2 gp. is then combined with the reactive gps. of a polymer. The material has improved light-sensitivity and gives mechanically stable printing plates at an increased rate. In an example a light-sensitive polymer was obtd. by reacting 2,2',4,4'-tetrahydroxybenzophenone and 2,1,5-diazonaphthaquinone-sulphonyl chloride with successive addns. of NEt3, acetic anhydride, NEt3, styrene-maleic anhydride copolymer (5% in acetone) and finally more NEt3.

Abstract: The compsns. contain (a) >=1 cpd. of low mol. wt. and contg. >=1 unsatd. photopolymerisable double bond; (b) >=1 compatible organic polymeric binder; (c) a photo-initiator; and (d) 0.001-0.1 wt. % of an etherified thioanthraquinone cpd. of formula (I):- in which R is 1-12C alkyl, 1-8C alkyl substd. by an opt. etherified and/or esterified OH gp. and/or an alkoxycarbonyl gp., or an opt. substd. phenyl gp. Pref. cpds. (I) are propyl-, n-butyl-, and isobutylthioanthraquinones, and esp. 2-butylthio-2-anthraquinone (II). Presence of the (I) in known photopolymerisable compsns. reduces undesired polymerisation of the compsn. in the shadow of fine opaque image elements during exposure in contact with a negative, thus giving improved image clarity. The presence of the (I) does not reduce the light sensitivity or exposure latitude of the material.

Abstract: The compsn. is based on a mixt. of low-mol. (poly)olefinic cpd(s). (I) and compatible organic polymeric binder(s) (II) contg. a photoinitiator. The novelty is that the compsn. contains 0.001-0.1 wt. % homogeneously dispersed 1-12C-alkyl-thio-anthraquinone (III) and pref. also 0.01-1 wt. % of an organic tert. amine (IV) or an aromatic alpha-ketocarboxylic acid (V) or its 1-18 C-alkyl ester or 0.02-2 wt. % of an organic N-nitrosohydroxylamine salt (VI). The relief structure is improved by reducing undesired polymerisable in the complete shadow of fine opaque image elements, with simultaneous favourable exposure latitude and without impairing the speed.
