    Abstract: The invention relates to a process for the preparation of acylphosphine oxides of the formula in which R and/or R represent an alkyl, cyclohexyl, cyclopentyl, phenyl, substituted thienyl, pyrrolyl, pyridyl or phenyl radical or R represents an alkoxy, aryloxy or arylalkoxy radical, R represents a tertiary alkyl radical, a tertiary cycloalkyl radical or a thienyl, pyrrolyl, furyl, pyridyl, phenyl or naphthyl radical, which may carry halogen, alkyl, alkylthio, alkoxy, cycloalkyl or phenyl groups, by reaction of an acid halide of the formula in which X represents Cl or Br, with an alkoxyphosphine of the formula in which R represents an alkyl or cycloalkyl radical, at 20 to 150 DEG C, if desired in the presence of an inert organic solvent and a tertiary amine. The acylphosphine oxides prepared according to the invention are suitable as photoinitiators.

    Abstract: Acylphosphine compounds of the formula Ia X is oxygen, sulphur or an electron pair, R is R or OR , R is -OM where M = metal cation or ammonium cation, R is a tertiary alkyl radical or cycloalkyl radical or a phenyl radical which is only substituted in one ortho-position to the carbonyl group, R is hydrogen, or an alkyl or aryl radical. The acylphosphine compounds are highly effective photoinitiators for photopolymerisable materials, such as coating compositions, paints, printing inks, unsaturated polyesters, recording materials and, preferably, aqueous polymer dispersions or solutions.
