Abstract: A process for the manufacture of polyalkylenepolyamines by reacting a primary or secondary amine with a compound of the formula (I) where X is -Cl, -Br, or -OSO3H and R1 and R2 are H or saturated alkyl of 1 to 4 carbon atoms, and with at least the stoichiometric amount, based on the compound of the formula I, of an aqueous solution, of from 15 to 45 percent strength, of an alkali metal hydroxide or alkaline earth metal hydroxide, at from 60 DEG to 200 DEG C., cooling the reaction mixture to a temperature at which 2 aqueous phases form, and separating off the upper phase, containing polyalkylenepolyamnines. The rate of reaction can be increased by adding catalytic amounts of compounds which initiate the polymerization of alkyleneimines.

Abstract: Parent Patent discloses a process for continuous addn. of 1-12 moles ethylene oxide and/or propylene oxide to a cpd. contg. >=1 active H, in a heat exchanger-surrounded spiral tube reactor, under pressures at which reaction mixt. is liquid, in presence of alkaline-reacting catalysts. Reaction takes place at 190-240 degrees C, kept constant over tube length. Peak temps. in 1st half of reactor are =30 degrees C above inlet temp. and =240 degrees C. Ratio tube length:tube dia. is 105:(1-10). Tube length is 100-160m. and reaction mixt. is passed through at 20-60kg/hr. In present Patent of Addn., the reaction mixt. leaving the reactor is continuously monitored spectrophotometrically. In the presence of free ethylene oxide or propylene oxide, an electrical signal appearing in spectrophotometer functions as controlled for a regulator which switches off plant operation. Hazard of explosion through free alkylene oxide in presence of catalysts can be prevented. Plant can be operated without supervision, and can be switched on again, by hand or automatically, with a slight rise in reactor temp., for alkylene oxide-free prod. generation.

Abstract: Mixt. of 0.5-10 pts. wt. trimethylamine per 100 pts. wt. of another tert. amine is used as the tert. amine in fatty alkyl diketene, (I), prepn. by (a) reacting fatty acid halides with tert. amines in inert, organic solvents at up to 90 deg.C; (b) washing out the reaction mixt. with water; (c) separating the organic phase; and (d) recovering (I) by organic solvent evaporation. Aq. emulsions of (I), or mixts. of (I), are used as bulk sizing agents for paper, e.g. in 0.05-0.15% concn., calculated as solids, w.r.t. pulp. Trimethylamine addn. suppresses viscosity increase during amine addn. and increases purity of (I).
