Abstract: A hardenable coating compsn. contains a binder comprising a cpd (A) with olefinic unsaturation and urethane gps. and opt. an unsatd. cpd. (B) copolymerisable with (A) but differing from it., (A) is the reactn. prod. of vinyl isocyanate and a cpd. contg. OH gp(s) and the residue of an ester of a 3-6C carboxylic acid with alpha, beta-unsatn. Used in printing inks and (protective) varnishes for e.g. metals, wood, plastics, leather or paper. The compsn. can be cured by heating opt. in presence of initiators (e.g. organic peroxides) and accelerators (e.g. Co salts) or pref. by irradiation with UV or electron beams. The compsn. dries rapidly and adheres well partic. to metals.

Abstract: Application of coatings or double layers onto supports comprises curing a coating compsn. contg. polymerisable binders and photo-inductors, by the action of light of wave length 200-500 nm. The coating compsn. consists of (A) 99.9-20% of a reaction prod. from (a) opt. (partially)etherified amine-HCHO condensates, and (b) acrylic and/or methacrylic cpds. contg. OH or NH2 gps, in amts. of 1/3-1 mol. acrylic cpds/equiv. CH2-O-gps. in the amine-HCHO condensate; (B) 0-60% of copolymerisable organic cpds. liq. at room temp; (c) 0-80% of pigments or fillers; (D) 0-20% of organic auxiliary prods. usual in paints and varnishes; (E) 0-50% of other unsatd. polymerisable binders; and (F) 0.1-20% of a photo-inductor system. The binders are cheap, easily prepd. and are rapidly cured. The compsns. may be applied to wood, metal, paper or synthetic resins and may also be used as mastics or printing inks.
