The alcohol alkoxylates are alkoxylated alcohols of the formula (I) R-O-[(CnH2nO)x-(PhC2H3O)y-(CmH2mO)z]co-H in which R represents a hydrocarbon radical having 1 to 30 carbon atoms; n, m independently of one another represent a value of from 2 to 16; x represents a value of from 0 to 100; y represents a value of from 0.5 to 100; z represents a value of from 0 to 100; and x+y+z corresponds to a value of from 2 to 100, with at least one of x or z being greater than 0.

The invention relates to a method for testing substances and mixtures of substances for toxic characteristics, to the use of said method and to corresponding test kits. The method is essentially based on the determination of a fatty acid binding protein from the liver, L-FABP. The use of said method provides an early indication of carcinogenic and tumour-promoting characteristics of the tested substance or mixture of substances.
