The invention relates to a process for the direct preparation of alkali metal cyanide and alkaline earth metal cyanide granules from an HCN-containing gas and an aqueous solution or suspension of an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal hydroxide. Reaction is performed in a reactor for fluidised bed spray granulation, wherein a solution or suspension of the hydroxide is sprayed onto seed granules of the cyanide being prepared and at the same time a hydrogen cyanide-containing gas is supplied to the reactor and water is evaporated by means of a fluidising gas. The preferred fluidising gas is steam. The reaction gases from a BMA or Andrussow process may be quenched with water and the gas mixture used as fluidising gas. By using a CO2-free HCN-containing gas, alkali metal cyanide granules with an outstanding combination of properties, including a concentration of alkali metal ' carbonate and alkali metal formate together of less then 0.4 wt.%, are obtainable.

This invention relates to a process for the production of granulates substantially comprising an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal cyanide from an aqueous solution of the cyanide by fluidised bed spray granulation. According to the invention, superheated steam is used as the drying gas. Steam is preferably circulated in a closed circuit and only excess steam is discharged and condensed. The process produces little waste gas and results in high quality granulates.

Production of aqueous sodium methioninate (I) solution containing little sodium carbonate from the crude mixture from alkaline hydrolysis of 5-( beta -methylmercapto-ethyl)-hydantoin (II) comprises: (a) distilling water from mixture, preferably with sodium hydroxide addition, until the (I) content is 60-90 wt.%; and (b) separating the sodium carbonate precipitate at 90-140 degrees C. Production of aqueous sodium methioninate (I) solution containing little sodium carbonate from the crude mixture from the alkaline hydrolysis of 5-( beta -methylmercapto-ethyl)-hydantoin (II) with 1.1-6 equivalents of sodium hydroxide and/or carbonate comprises: (a) distilling water from the mixture, preferably with addition of more sodium hydroxide, until the (I) content is 60-90 wt.%; and (b) separating the sodium carbonate precipitate in anhydrous form or as monohydrate and/or bicarbonate, at 90-140 degrees C.
