Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject compound having humidity-retaining action and keratin-softening action and useful as a blend component for skin cosmetics and hair cosmetics, and further, a synthetic intermediate for agrochemicals, medicined and dyes. SOLUTION: This guaidine derivative is represented by formula I [A and B are each a 2-8C alkylene; D is a direct bond, CO or a 1-6C alkylene; E is H, a lower alkyl, an aralkyl or an aryl; (m) is 1-6; (n) is 0-6; R is H, a lower alkyl or (AO)m -(BO)n -D-E, with the proviso that, when A is a straight-chain alkylene and (m) is 1 and (n) is 0, R is not H and, when R is H, methyl or hydroxyethyl, (AO)m -(BO)n -D-E is not hydroxyethyl and, when R is H, (AO)m -(BO)n -D-E is not a lower alkoxyethyl] or its acid addition salt. The derivative is obtained by reacting an amine of formula II with a guanidylating reagent. The compound of formula I includes e.g. 2-(2-hydroxyethoxy)ethyl-guanidine.

Abstract: PURPOSE: To provide the subject new compound having humectant action, cuticle emollient action, etc., and useful as a compounding component for skin cosmetic and hair cosmetic and a production intermediate for agrochemicals, pharmaceuticals, etc. CONSTITUTION: A guanidine derivative of formula I (one of R to R is hydroxyl and the others are H) or its salt, e.g. N-(aminoiminomethyl)-trans-4-hydroxy-L- proline. The compound of formula I can be produced e.g. by reacting a proline compound of formula II with a guanidylating agent (e.g. cyanamide or S- alkylisothiourea). The guanidylation reaction is preferably carried out at 0-200 deg.C for 1-72hr under stirring when cyanamide is used as the guanidylating agent or at 25-200 deg.C for 1-72hr under stirring in the presence of a base such as barium hydroxide or pyridine when the agent is other than cyanamide.

When an organic or an inorganic acid, preferably a dicarboxylic acid, especially succinic acid is blended in the cosmetic, softening effects can be enhanced. The amount thereof blended is within the range of 0.001-30wt.%. The compound of formula I is obtained by reacting a cyclic amine derivative of formula III with a guanylating reagent.

The compound of formula I or II is obtained by reacting, e.g. an amine derivative such as 2-(2-aminoethoxy)ethanol with a guanidylation reagent such as cyanamide. Furthermore, the effect can moreover be enhanced by further blending the cosmetic with 0.01-10wt.% of succinic acid.
