    Abstract: The invention provides novel conjugated polymers comprised of arylamine-substituted poly(arylene vinylenes). The polymers have the general structure (I)wherein: Ar is arylene, heteroarylene, substituted arylene or substituted heteroarylene containing one to three aromatic rings; R1 is an arylamine substituent having the formula -Ar1-N(R4R5) wherein Ar1 is as defined for Ar and R4 and R5 are independently hydrocarbyl, substituted hydrocarbyl, heteroatom-containing hydrocarbyl, or substituted heteroatom-containing hydrocarbyl, or together form a cyclic group; and R2 and R3 are independently selected from the group consisting of hydrido, halo and cyano, or may be as defined for R4 and R5, or may together form a triple bond. Monomeric precursors and methods of synthesizing the precursors are also provided, as are electroluminescence and other devices containing a polymer of the invention.

    Abstract: The present invention provides electroactive polymers (40), transducers and devices that maintain pre-strain in one or more portions (42) of an electroactive polymer (40). Electroactive polymers described herein may include a pre-strained portion (42) and a stiffened portion (44) configured to maintain pre-strain in the pre-strained portion (42). One partially cured polymer is then further cured to stiffen and maintain the pre-strain. In another fabrication technique, a support layer is coupled to the polymer that maintains pre-strain in a portion of an electroactive polymer. Another embodiment of the invention cures a polymer precursor to maintain pre- strain in an electroactive polymer.

    Abstract: The invention describes rolled electroactive polymer devices. The invention also describes employment of these devices in a wide array of applications and methods for their fabrication. A rolled electroactive polymer device converts between electrical and mechanical energy; and includes a rolled electroactive polymer and at least two electrodes to provide the mechanical/electrical energy conversion. Prestrain is typically applied to the polymer. In one embodiment, a rolled electroactive polymer device employs a mechanism, such as a spring, that provides a force to prestrain the polymer. Since prestrain improves mechanical/electrical energy conversion for many electroactive polymers, the mechanism thus improves performance of the rolled electroactive polymer device.

    Abstract: The present invention relates to electroactive polymers (152) that are pre-strained to improve conversion from electrical to mechanical energy. When a voltage is applied to electrodes (156) contacting a pre-strained polymer (152), the polymer (152) deflects. This deflection may be used to do mechanical work. The pre-strain improves the mechanical response of an electroactive polymer (152). The present invention also relates to actuators including an electroactive polymer and mechanical coupling to convert deflection of the polymer into mechanical work. The present invention further relates to compliant electrodes that conform to the shape of a polymer. The present invention provides methods for fabrication electromechanical devices including one or more electroactive polymers.
