Abstract: Described herein is a method to create dendritic biocompatible polymers from pairs of complementary dendritic nucleic acid monomers in a controlled manner, using polymerization triggers. The dendritic monomers are constituted of nucleic acids and an organic polymer capable of self-assembly. A variety of additional improvements are described herein, including processes not requiring snap cooling, “wobble clamp” designs to confer a transitory measure of hairpin stability prior to branch migration, and multiple assemblies of amplifying systems. Depending on the context this technology could be used to reveal the presence of a large variety of analytes such as specific nucleic acid molecules, small molecules, proteins, and peptides.

Abstract: Described herein are methods for assessing cytotoxicity of an agent. The methods include providing a target cell that has been engineered to express intracellularly a reporter that is not expressed endogenously by the target cell, exposing the target cell to an agent capable of modulating cytotoxicity and assaying the activity of the reporter, wherein a change in reporter activity relative to a reference value is indicative of the agent being able to modulate cytotoxicity of the target cell.

Abstract: This invention relates to a hyperspectral imaging system for denoising and/or color unmixing multiple overlapping spectra in a low signal-to-noise regime with a fast analysis time. This system may carry out Hyper-Spectral Phasors (HySP) calculations to effectively analyze hyper-spectral time-lapse data. For example, this system may carry out Hyper-Spectral Phasors (HySP) calculations to effectively analyze five-dimensional (5D) hyper-spectral time-lapse data. Advantages of this imaging system may include: (a) fast computational speed, (b) the ease of phasor analysis, and (c) a denoising algorithm to obtain the minimally-acceptable signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). An unmixed color image of a target may be generated. These images may be used in diagnosis of a health condition, which may enhance a patient's clinical outcome and evolution of the patient's health.

Abstract: In various embodiments of the present disclosure, an oxygen-generating bioelectrical reactor comprises two chambers, a first oxidative chamber configured for the abiotic oxidation of water to generate molecular oxygen, and a second reductive chamber configured for the biotic reduction of an insoluble metal(loid) oxide or hydroxide. In various embodiments, the biotic reduction comprises microbially-catalyzed metal(loid) ion reduction of the insoluble metal(loid) oxide or hydroxide, wherein a dissimilatory metal(loid) reducing microorganism transfers electrons obtained from the oxidation of the water extracellularly to the metal(loid) ions.

Abstract: A medical device for reducing incontinence can be dimensioned to be placed in an interior region of a subject surrounded by muscle tissue. The medical device can include a first balloon having an interior space containing a fluid. The proximal end of a first fluid conduit can be coupled to an outlet of the first balloon. The medical device can also include a pressure sensing detector coupled to a distal end of the first fluid conduit. The pressure sensing detector can include a second balloon. The second balloon can also be in fluid communication with the interior space of the first balloon. The first balloon can be compressed from the contraction of the muscle tissue, which can displace a portion of the fluid within the interior space of the first balloon. The portion of fluid moves towards the second balloon and causes the second balloon to increase in interior volume thereby indicating a contraction force of the muscle tissue.

Abstract: The present invention discloses a method for treating wounds and for accelerating the healing of wounds by administering an effective amount of a pharmaceutical composition containing type VII collagen protein, mini-C7 protein, variants thereof or any combinations thereof. The pharmaceutical composition may be administered through a variety of routes including intravenous injection, topical application, or oral ingestion. The method may further include administering a genetically modified fibroblast capable of expressing type VII collagen protein, miniC7 protein, variants thereof or small growth factors to achieve synergistic healing effect.

Abstract: Systems and methods for sequestering emissions from marine vessels are provided. Emissions (either flue gas from exhaust or CO2 carried on the ship under pressure in gas cylinders or CO2 obtained during the ships travel via capture) are mixed in a reactor with sea water (e.g., via gas exchange through head-space equilibration or bubbling through a diffuser) until a pH of 5.5 to 6.5 is obtained. Systems and reactors pump seawater through a reactor vessel containing a reaction medium (e.g., carbonates and silicates). The reactor produces an effluent that can be expelled into the ocean. The effluent produced from the result of a reaction according to embodiments has approximately twice the concentration of Dissolved Inorganic Carbon (DIC) and Alkalinity (Alk) as the incoming sea water and has an increased Ca+2 concentration above sea water.

Abstract: A method for forming a composite substrate containing layers of dissimilar materials is provided. The method includes a step of disposing a release layer over a base substrate where the base substrate is composed of a first material. A template layer is attached to the release layer. Characteristically, the template layer is composed of a second material and adapted to form a compound semiconductor device thereon.
