Abstract: A modular device includes base and color sensing portions. The color sensing portion has a face, a controlled light source offset from the face to define an interior, the face configured to engage a target surface about a perimeter of the device housing wherein ambient light is restricted from entering the interior. A color sensor receives light reflected from the target surface and generates output signals representative of a surface color. The base portion communicates with the color sensor and a user device having a hosted program which generates a user interface enabling users to provide control input for the color sensor. The program further receives the output signals from the color sensing device and displays a first image of the detected color, and displays a second image of a user-selected color beside the first image. Color data values are further displayed corresponding to the difference between displayed colors.

Abstract: An enclosed benchtop analytical device, as well as systems, processes, and techniques related thereto are disclosed. A benchtop analytical device can include an enclosure enclosing a probe and a sample. A compliance component can determine satisfaction of one or more compliance rules, such as a compliance rule relating to an enclosure being in an operable configuration based on a lid of the enclosure being closed. If the compliance rule(s) is determined to be satisfied, the compliance component may enable the release of optical energy for interrogation of the sample via the probe. In some embodiments, the enclosure can enclose a sample plate that can be used to conveniently and accurately retain a sample in a suitable position within the enclosure.

Abstract: The disclosure relates to measurement and classification of tissue structures in samples using a combination of light imaging and spectroscopy, in particular although not necessarily exclusively for detection of tumors such as basal cell carcinoma or breast tumors in tissue samples. Embodiments disclosed include a method of automatically identifying tissue structures in a sample, the method comprising the steps of: measuring (1702, 1703) a response of an area of the sample to illumination with light; identifying (1704) regions within the area having a measured response within a predetermined range; determining (1705) locations within the identified regions; performing (1706) spectroscopic analysis of the sample at the determined locations; and identifying (1707) a tissue structure for each region from the spectroscopic analysis performed on one or more locations therein.

Abstract: Color information obtained by an optical sensor of a stylus can be displayed at a pen tip of the stylus with good visibility, and visual feedback is provided as a suitable user interface when the color information is transmitted from the stylus to an electronic apparatus. A stylus includes: a trigger signal generating circuit; an optical sensor that detects incident light; a memory circuit that stores color information of the incident light detected by the optical sensor; a color presenting circuit which is disposed at a pen tip of the stylus and which presents a color corresponding to the color information; and a control circuit. The control circuit presents the color information detected by the optical sensor using the color presenting circuit at the pen tip, and controls the color presenting circuit in response to a trigger signal from the trigger signal generating circuit when transmitting the color information to the electronic apparatus.

Abstract: An enclosed benchtop Raman spectrometry device, systems, methods, and techniques related thereto are disclosed. A benchtop Raman spectrometer can comprise an enclosure enclosing a probe and sample. In an embodiment, a compliance component can determine concurrent satisfaction of a group of compliance rules. The compliance rules can relate to contact between the probe and sample, environmental conditions within the enclosure, illumination conditions within the enclosure, an operation state of a viewport allowing direct viewing of a sample-probe interface, etc. While concurrent satisfaction is determined, the release of optical energy for interrogation of the sample via the probe can be enabled. In an embodiment, the probe can comprise a spherical optical element, e.g., a BallProbe®, which can be brought into contact with the sample to perform Raman spectroscopy.
