Abstract:
An elongated component part, extending across the width of a moving material web, can be adjusted for the purpose of applying a liquid or viscid medium onto the moving material web. The component part is supported by a supporting beam and is equipped with an adjustment fixture including a plurality of adjustment devices which are arranged along the length of the elongated component part at the support locations. The adjustment devices are separated from each other and adjusted for achieving a forced deformation of the component part in a direction that is perpendicular to their longitudinal axis. The adjustment positions of the respective adjustment devices are recorded. Imaginary connecting lines between the free ends of two respective, neighboring support locations are formed. An angle between two respective, neighboring connecting lines is calculated. The respective, calculated angle is compared with a pre-determined boundary angle. Either the respective adjustment device is adjusted by a pre-determined adjustment distance until the desired angle is achieved, or the adjustment of the respective adjustment device is terminated in case the pre-determined boundary angle is reached.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for in-place repair of the outer surface of a cylinder in an offset lithographic printing press. The steps of the method are performed while the cylinder remains in the printing press. The steps are: cleaning the outer surface of the cylinder; applying an epoxy coating on the cylinder; drying the coating; inspecting the coating after drying to locate any high spots or low spots; and removing any high spots and filling any low spots. In the preferred embodiment, application of the epoxy coating is carried out with an applicator blade mounted on the printing press frame adjacent to the outer surface of the cylinder to be repaired. The applicator blade is an elongated member of substantially the same length as the cylinder and is adjustably mounted parallel to the axis of the cylinder at an adjustable distance from the outer surface of the cylinder, said distance being equal to the desired thickness of the epoxy coating to be applied to the outer surface of the cylinder. The applicator blade is mounted to brackets on the printing press using adjustable fasteners which allow for repositioning the applicator blade.
Abstract:
A method of applying a thin coating to the lower surface of a bilevel substrate includes the following steps: A liquid coating, such as a material useful as an alignment layer, is applied over a bilevel substrate, such as an LCD panel. The bilevel substrate may have flat-topped ribs or other protrusions so long as the tops of the protrusions are coplanar. Next, a leveling device, such as a doctor blade, is moved across the upper surface of the bilevel substrate so that the liquid coating is removed from the upper surface but remains on the lower surface. Finally, the liquid coating is hardened and shrunk, e.g., by drying or curing, resulting in a highly uniform hardened coating, such as an alignment layer, on the lower surface of the bilevel substrate.
Abstract:
An arrangement for improved dispensed material bead profile control, in which a viscous material is dispensed in a stream upon a surface. The stream is transported along that surface and forms a bead of the viscous material. The bead is then confined with air streams which also reshape the profile of the bead. The material is dispensed by a nozzle which has at least two orifices in its proximity. One orifice is located at a distance from the nozzle which is greater than for the other orifice. The orifices form air streams under pressure and direct the air streams toward the material stream, as well as toward the bead formed on the surface when the material stream is transported along that surface.
Abstract:
Process for the production of surface-finished, at least monoaxially stretched, thermoplastic films which are characterized in that the surface coating is imparted by means of slot doctoring systems before at least one stretching stage, and the subsequent stretching is carried out without contact with the surface.
Abstract:
A method for selectively applying light-absorbing particles to a lenticular, light-transmissive screen, such as a projection television screen. The particles are charged and are selectively deposited in grooves between lenticules of the screen by electrically charging the lenticule peaks to the same polarity, to effect repulsion, and then depositing the particles onto the screen. The particles consist essentially of a material having a substantially higher microwave absorption coefficient than the screen material and have heat-fusible outer surfaces. After deposition, the particles are selectively heated by generally-applied microwave radiation, until they fuse to each other and to the screen.
Abstract:
An apparatus for spreading a smear over a slide with a spreader (slide) for microscopic observation, includes a mechanism for suitably varying the relative spreading speed between the slide and the spreader, and/or the spreading angle formed between the slide and the spreader, in order to maintain the thickness of the smear at a constant value, by means of imparting a programmatic command to vary the speed and/or the angle, with the aid of a servomotor and/or a cam means.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for providing a substantially void-free tape wrapping around a pipe having a longitudinal weld bead protruding from the surface thereof. While the pipe is simultaneously advanced and rotated, liquid viscous sealing material is applied to the pipe, and the applied sealing material is then doctored by means of at least one doctor blade. The doctor blade faces the advancing pipe surface, with the axis of the doctor blade at an angle of about 10.degree. to 50.degree. to the axis of the pipe, and is urged against the pipe so that it is resiliently deformed by the pipe and accommodates passage of the weld bead underneath it. In this way the doctor blade doctors the sealing material so that it provides a smooth transition between the weld bead and the adjacent pipe surfaces. The tape is then spirally wrapped around the pipe. The invention is particularly useful when a heated sealing material, eg. a hot melt adhesive, is applied to a heated pipe which is subsequently wrapped with a heated polymeric tape having the same sealing material on its interior surface.
Abstract:
When a coating composition is applied to a web, the composition is applied in excess, and the excess is wiped off with the help of a portion of the web which has not yet been coated.
Abstract:
The disclosure concerns both an apparatus and a method for adjusting the applied weight of a coating composition on a web traveling over a support roll. The support roll is opposed by a scraper that removes excess coating composition which was just previously applied to the web. The scraper has an entrance flank that is opposed to the support roll. The downstream end of the entrance flank is defined by a sharp edged end. The length of the pressing zone between the scraper and the support roll is adjusted by swiveling the scraper around its axis with respect to the support roll so as to adjust the position of the sharp edged end of the scraper with respect to the coated surface of the web. The surface of the support roll is elastic so that it can be depressed under the pressure applied thereto by the sharp edged end of the entrance flank. The scraper may be developed as a sector of a roll having the axis of the scraper as the axis of the curve. Further, there may be a plurality of scrapers on a single support body, thereby facilitating easy substitution of scrapers.
