Abstract:
The present invention provides a method for easily obtaining a perpendicular magnetic recording medium having the desired magnetic properties by sputtering, and a magnetic recording medium obtained by this method. The perpendicular magnetic recording medium of the present invention is a perpendicular magnetic recording medium comprising at least a soft magnetic underlayer, an underlayer, a magnetic recording layer, a protective layer, and a liquid lubricant layer sequentially laminated on a nonmagnetic substrate, wherein the magnetic recording layer is a rare earth-transition metal alloy amorphous film formed by sputtering, and the formation of the magnetic recording layer by sputtering is performed using a film-forming gas incorporating 2% or more, but 60% or less of an H2 gas. The present invention also discloses a method for producing the perpendicular magnetic recording medium.
Abstract:
A system and method for synthesizing nanopowder which provides for precursor material ablation from two opposing electrodes that are spaced apart within a gaseous atmosphere, where a plasma is created by a high power pulsed electrical discharge between the electrodes, such pulse being of short duration to inertially confine the plasma, thereby creating a high temperature and high density plasma having high quench and/or reaction rates with the gaseous atmosphere for improved nanopowder synthesis.
Abstract:
A method for coating paperboard comprising heating paperboard to a temperature sufficient to remove at least some moisture from the paperboard; applying an aqueous dispersion of at least one water-dispersible polymer to the paperboard product; heating the paperboard to at least partially cure the water-dispersible polymer; and cooling the paperboard to at least 160 degrees Fahrenheit to reduce the tackiness of the cured water-dispersible polymer.
Abstract:
An improved thermal barrier coating for metal substrates such as superalloys is disclosed. The coating is a slurry composition, comprising spheres of zirconia, at least some of which are hollow, contained within a porous oxide matrix, such as aluminosilicate. The slurry composition can be applied by slurry casting or similar techniques to the desired surface. Coating methods are also described. In general, they involve the application of successive layers of variations of the slurry composition, with various curing techniques used between layers and after the final coating is applied. Another embodiment of this invention embraces a composite coating, comprising (i) an oxide matrix phase; (ii) zirconia spheres embedded in the oxide matrix; and (iii) a porous phase.
Abstract:
A product and process by which heat from hyperthermal sources is blocked by compositions including coordination complexes. The compositions provide a sustained, uniform, and controlled method of heat blockage in an artificial boundary layer or heat exchange matrix. When the compositions are incorporated in a coating composition, the rate of discharge of the coating medium is continuous, gradual, and controlled to the desired rate level for a given thermal environment.
Abstract:
A process of producing a high gloss oxidizable extrusion coated polyethylene is provided. This process entails extrusion coating a low density polyethylene of narrow molecular weight distribution having a low melt index, a low swell ratio, and a polydispersity index below 9.

Physical method for the treatment of the surfaces of polyolefinic plastic laminates, polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), cardboards and metal sheets such as, particularly, aluminium and tinplate, of any thicknesses and widths, by means of a flame produced by the combustion of a mixture of air-hydrocarbon gas, characterized in that such a mixture is enriched with pure oxygen gas.
Abstract:
A method of making an enamel bead and resulting bead which includes the provision of a short length of copper tubing forming a bead core member wherein the copper tubing is heated to a red hot state and rolled in copper enamel flux one or more times to coat the tubing following which the flux coated tubing is again heated to a red hot state and rolled in particulate enamel material to coat the tubing externally with enamel material, then heating the enamel material coating until it melts and is distributed throughout the tubing outer surface in the desired bead configuration and finally cooling the enamel coating to form a highly durable bead having a copper tubing core with an outer layer of enamel of a selected color.
Abstract:
The present invention relates to a process for forming a multi-layer coating including at least two coating layers by performing the oven drying step at one time, which comprises coating at least partially the surface of the substrate with a powder coating composition, then applying a slurry paint composition comprising synthetic resin particles dispersed in an aqueous medium and then heating.
Abstract:
A portion of the feed gas is supplied in a pulsating fashion to a fluidizeded reactor containing the articles to be coated mixed with fluidizing particles. The pulse frequency is between 1 and 10 Hz. A continuous flow of a portion of the total gas supply at a rate insufficient to produce turbulence in the bed is provided to facilitate control of the pulsing frequency and reduce the energy necessary for the pulsating gas stream. The gases fed to the reactor are a coating gas and a carrier gas, the flow containing the coating gas including a portion of the carrier gas. Either the pulsed flow or the continuous flow may consist entirely of carrier gas. The fluidizing particles are preferably of the same material as the articles to be coated and are typically of a grain size between 2 and 3 mm.
