Abstract:
Multifunctional coating films that can be applied in liquid form are provided for compressing, sealing, covering and preserving surfaces. The films include a composition of polysaccharide materials and/or homo- or heteroglycan water-soluble polysaccharide derivatives, polyol spacers, and crosslinkers with carbonyl or carboxylic function(s). As-applied, the composition is water-soluble and reactive, but after hardening it is capable of absorbing water or swelling, impermeable to water vapour, stable against water and UV and can be biologically degraded in a controlled manner. By reacting polysaccharide materials, polysaccharide derivatives and polyol spacers with cross linkers having carbonyl or carboxylic function(s), mechanically stable flexible films are obtained, which retain their mechanical properties up to a foreign material content of 80%. The films can swell in a controlled manner and can bind up to 75% water relative to their dry weight, corresponding to the degree of crosslinking and the spacer that is used.
Abstract:
A method is provided for effecting a color change in wood or a wood-grained article, and the article prepared thereby. The method includes the steps of applying to a nitrocellulose-finished wood article a composition that includes a water-based dye or pigment and a water-based varnish or lacquer over the nitrocellulose coating, without physically or chemically stripping the nitrocellulose layer. In an alternative embodiment, a wood-grained article is refinished by application of the water-based dye or pigment and a water-based varnish or Lacquer to its surface.
Abstract:
Disclosed herein is a process for preparing and applying a coating composition at extremely high pressures under conditions which significantly reduce the amount of volatile organic materials which are given off during the spray process. The spray process involves filling a spray pump receptacle with the coating wherein the spray pump is operable at pressures above about 2,750 psi and wherein the pump is provided with a temperature control means for assuring that the temperature of the pumped coating is in the range of about 65.degree. F. to 120.degree. F. so that the viscosity of the pumped coating is maintained in the range of about 250 to about 1,000 cps. The resulting coatings may be applied as a top coat, sealer, lacquer, etc. to any desired substrate, although wood is preferred, with the resulting finished coating being equal or superior to existing coating compositions.
Abstract:
Disclosed is a method for treating wood veneer, including the steps of providing at least one sheet of wood veneer; coating at least one side of the sheet of wood veneer with an aqueous coating composition including nanocellulose to obtain a coated sheet of wood veneer; and drying the coated sheet using compression pressure and heat. Also disclosed is a coated wood veneer including a sheet of wood veneer and a coating including nanocellulose arranged on at least one surface of the sheet.

Abstract:
The invention is directed to a process for the continuous acetylation of wood elements. The process particularly combines a batchwise impregnation step, with a continuous reaction step. In order to realize this, a collection step is built-in, so as to allow batches of impregnated wood elements to be fed into a reactor in a continuous manner. Very high acetylation contents can be obtained, at a level that had not been achievable before in a continuous and non-catalyzed acetylation process.
Abstract:
Propylene polymers are heat sealed to enamel coated metal surfaces, the enamel having incorporated therein an adhesion promoting carboxyl modified polypropylene resin. The bond strength of the heat seal is improved by incorporating the carboxyl modified polypropylene resin in the enamel coating formulation dissolved in a hot (heated above 100.degree. C) organic solvent solution selected from aliphatic acids, alcohols and hydrocarbons having at least 10 carbon atoms.
Abstract:
A coated article such as a bowling pin and method of forming such a coated article. The article may comprise an extended life bowling pin having portions of different wear susceptibility wherein those portions having greatest wear susceptibility are provided with thickest coating portions. The method comprehends an electrostatic retention of the coating forming material delivered to the article body from a charged cloud thereof. The cloud formation and electrostatic potential are coordinated to effect the desired coating thickness control. The coating material is fused subsequent to the deposition to form a variable depth coating having an external configuration accurately defining the coated article.
