A compound useful for reducing fouling in a hydrocarbon refining process is provided. A method for preparing the compound includes functionalizing a polymer having a vinyl chain end to obtain a terminal group having one or more anhydride units, and reacting the anhydride units with a polyamine. Methods of using the compound and compositions thereof are also provided.

Corrosive amine salts in hydrocarbon streams such as desalted crude oil streams can be prevented or avoided by adding certain amine scavenging chemicals to the streams to remove the amines therefrom. Suitable amine scavengers include, but are not necessarily limited to, carboxylic anhydrides and copolymers of carboxylic anhydrides, aromatic anhydrides, isocyanates, polyisocyanates, and epoxides. The non-corrosive reaction products of the amines and/or ammonia with these scavengers are preferably oil-soluble, non-basic and thermally stable. The amine scavengers bind up and react with the amines and/or ammonia to keep them from reacting with materials such as acids (e.g. HCl) to form corrosive amine salts.

A middle petroleum distillate composition containing a major proportion of middle petroleum distillate and a minor proportion of an additive in a sufficient amount to limit the settling speed of paraffins contained in said middle distillate. Said additive consists of a product resulting from a reaction between at least one aliphatic dicarboxylic compound and at least one primary amine functional compound of general formula (I), wherein R1 is a monovalent saturated aliphatic radical, Z is selected from —NR′— groupings in which R′ is a hydrogen atom or a monovalent saturated aliphatic radical, n is an integer between 2 and 4, and m is an integer between 1 and 4; said primary amine functional compound being used in a ratio of 0.3-0.8 mols per mol of said dicarboxylic compound.

Polar monomer-containing copolymers derived from at least one .alpha., .beta. unsaturated carbonyl compound, such as alkyl acrylates and one or more olefins, such olefins including ethylene and C.sub.3 -C.sub.20 .alpha.-olefins such as propylene and 1-butene, which copolymers have (a) an average ethylene sequence length, ESL, of from about 1.0 to less than about 3.0; (b) an average of at least 5 branches per 100 carbon atoms of the copolymer chains comprising the copolymer; (c) at least about 50% of said branches being methyl and/or ethyl branches; (d) substantially all of said incorporated polar monomer is present at the terminal position of said branches; (e) at least about 30% of said copolymer chains terminated with a vinyl or vinylene group; (f) a number average molecular weight, Mn, of from about 300 to about 15,000 when the copolymer is intended for dispersant or wax crystal modifier uses and up to about 500,000 where intended for viscosity modifier uses; and (g) substantial solubility in hydrocarbon and/or synthetic base oil. The copolymers are produced using late-transition-metal catalyst systems and, as an olefin monomer source other than ethylene preferably inexpensive, highly dilute refinery or steam cracker feed streams that have undergone only limited clean-up steps. Fuel and lubricating oil additives, particularly dispersants, wax crystal modifiers and flow improvers, are produced. Where functionalization and derivatization of these copolymers is required for such additives it is facilitated by the olefinic structures available in the copolymer chains.
