Abstract:
Electrostatically coated synthetic resin pultrusions (10) are provided in the form of elongated bodies presenting ends, with a series of elongated, spaced apart conductive elements (16) embedded within the pultruded bodies. Electrical coupling means (18) preferably in the form of a conductive primer is applied to the one end (14) of the pultrusion (10) prior to electrostatic coating in order to eliminate arcing problems. Alternately, a pultrusion may be provided having a section free of embedded elements with one or more sections having conductive elements therein.
Abstract:
Plastic substrates, such as but not limited to phenolic cellulosic composites such as those used in conventional toilet seats, are heated at a temperature and for a time sufficient to degas the substrate, and are then coated with a powder, and heated to cure the powder coating. In a preferred embodiment, a water-based electrically conductive coating is first applied to a phenolic cellulosic composite, and cured while the substrate is heated to degas the substrate sufficiently, such that a subsequently applied powder coating will not suffer from popping during curing. In a preferred embodiment, the part is coated at a temperature below the cure temperature of the coating composition.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for electrostatically coating a non-conductive article. The article is passed through multiple stations where electrostatically charged liquid coatings are applied to the article. Adjacent stations have opposite polarity and neutralize the residual electric charge buildup from the preceding station.
Abstract:
The invention relates to a surface treatment composition and a method of using the composition to provide the treated surface with a suitable surface conductivity for electrostatic painting of the surface. The surface treatment composition preferably comprises a mixture of: (a) a substituted or unsubstituted aromatic polycarboxylic acid, anhydride or salt thereof, and (b) a quaternary ammonium salt or (b') an ethoxylated tertiary fatty amine, in a compatible vehicle, said composition having a pH of below about 4.5, said polycarboxylic acid and said quaternary ammonium salt or ethoxylated fatty amine each being present in said composition in an amount effective to impart to said thermoplastic surface a resistivity value of between about 10.sup.8 ohms/cm.sup.2 and about 10.sup.12 ohms/cm.sup.2, or a 90% electrostatic charge decay time of less than five seconds, or both.
Abstract:
Water repellent treating compositions are based upon olefin and paraffin materials containing a substantial proportion of compounds containing from 20 to 24 carbon atoms. The treating compositions are especially useful for application to wood. Additives such as wood preservatives, alkyd resins and, in especially preferred compositions, organic ionizable compounds are included. The preferred compositions are useful for application to wood substrates which are subsequently electrostatically sprayed with a topcoating.
Abstract:
The invention relates to a method for the electrostatic covering with a powder layer of successive envelope for lamps. The powder each time to be provided is mixed with a transport gas and supplied to a first envelope to be covered via a duct. In order to terminate the covering operation, the supply of the powder to the transport gas is interrupted while the flow of the transport gas is maintained for cleaning the duct by blowing.
Abstract:
A porous, electrical insulating adhesive substrate is made by (A) electrostatically coating a flexible sheet material with heat reactive adhesive resin particles, having an average particle size of between about 1 micron to 2,000 microns, the adhesive particles are applied in a predetermined pattern on the sheet covering from about 10 percent to 90 percent of the sheet material area, the area between the resin pattern not being patterned and then (B) heating the patterened coated sheet material between about 65.degree.C to 250.degree.C, forming a discontinuous, 0.25 mil to 25 mil (0.006 mm to 0.635 mm) thick, dry coating pattern of heat reactive adhesive particles bonded to the sheet material, said heat reactive adhesive coating covering from about 10 percent to 90 percent of the sheet material area; the patterned coated sheet may then be inserted as an oil permeable layer insulation between high voltage windings and low voltage windings and between layers of high and low voltage windings in a wound coil assembly, after which the assembly can be heated at a temperature and for a time effective to securely bond the winding layers together, and thus provide a porous, oil permeable, bonded transformer coil assembly.
Abstract:
The present invention includes a robotic system for the enhanced automation, manipulation, and control of electroprocessing in two or three dimensions. In one embodiment, the system includes a sealed chamber devoid of any electrical or conductive components which would interfere with the electrical field and eventual material fabrication, while still allowing for two-dimensional and three-dimensional robot motion. In certain embodiments, the system of the invention produces materials or scaffolds with complex shapes, including materials with ridges, valleys, curves, and the like, which are difficult or impossible to construct using traditional systems.
Abstract:
The invention includes a method for preparing and top coating an item made of powder coated MDF (or other substrate containing wood) with the end result of improved visual and tactile smoothness; the invention includes the steps of cutting and machining the part, pre-powder preparation and sanding of the part, powder coating the part, post-powder preparation and sanding, and applying the liquid top coat to the part, resulting in a smoother finish than is currently available in any other powder coated MDF finish while requiring less coats than similar liquid paint finishes.
