Abstract:
A wood lacquer coating method is disclosed. The disclosed method includes applying aqueous white primer consisting of certain components to a wood substrate, applying aqueous varnish consisting of certain components to the aqueous white primer coated on the wood substrate, and applying aqueous color finish consisting of certain components to the wood substrate coated by the aqueous white primer and the aqueous varnish on the aqueous white primer.
Abstract:
There are provided processes for manufacturing trim boards. The processes can comprise applying a thin layer comprising a solvent based alkyd based primer sealer on at least one surface of the trim board; heat drying the thin layer so as to at least partially cure the thin layer comprising the solvent based alkyd based primer sealer; cooling the at least one surface; and applying a thin layer comprising a sealer on the thin layer comprising the solvent based alkyd based primer sealer. There are also provided methods for reducing and/or preventing migration of tannins in pine wood.
Abstract:
A composition for sealing exposed wood before finishing the wood, which composition includes polymer solids and an acid neutralizing agent. The acid neutralizing agent may be a weak base and/or a buffering agent. The polymer solids may include acrylate monomers, urethane monomers, and the like. Also disclosed is a method of sealing and neutralizing a wood surface before finishing the wood surface by applying the composition to the exposed wood surface.

Abstract:
The invention relates to a method for the treatment of surfaces of wood or woodbase materials with surface treatment compositions, and the timbers or woodbase materials thus treated by impregnating with a curable aqueous composition of α) low molecular weight compounds V which have at least two N-bonded groups and/or β) precondensates of the compound V and/or γ) reaction products or mixtures of the compound V with at least one alcohol which is C1-C6-alkanols, C2-C6-polyols or oligoalkylene glycols; treating that impregnated material at elevated temperature and) treating at least one surface of the wood or woodbase material to be treated with a surface treatment composition.
Abstract:
A method for treating wood having a high extractive content is disclosed. The method generally comprises applying to the wood a coating comprising a water-based polyurethane dispersion and a crosslinker. The dispersion can be cured and one or more additional coatings can be applied. The method results in reduced migration of extractives to the surface of the wood, improved adhesion and/or reduced staining of the wood.
Abstract:
A method of treating a substrate to seal the surface and inhibit microbiological growth using a low VOC coating composition including from about 30% to about 50% by weight of a soy methyl ester emulsion, from about 15% to about 25% by weight of a cationic acrylic resin polymer and from about 25% to about 55% by weight of water and allowing the composition to cure. The coating composition resists microbiological growth while in liquid form as well as following application and curing. The coating composition may be employed to treat architectural surfaces such as masonry and concrete and soft surfaces such as wall coverings and currency. Additives such as pigments, mineral fillers, surfactants, flattening agents and flame retardants may also be included.
Abstract:
Wood finishes and methods of production and application of wood finishes are provided. The finishes may contain biologically produced components, such as proteins, and specifically may include whey proteins derived from dairy processing. The wood finishes are environmentally friendly as they use reduced levels of solvents and provide a safe and protective coating for wood and wood products.
Abstract:
A method of treating substrates, such as wood, including the steps of applying an alkali silicate solution to one or more substrates and applying an alkali borate solution with boric oxide (B2O3) content to the substrates. Substrates that have been treated using the present method include a borate-silicate polymer within the substrate. When the present substrates are wood, wood products, or green lumber, they may be used to build structures.

Abstract:
Wood cellulose is treated with a reactive silicate. The reaction is done to cellulose within the wood and may be catalyzed with acid or base catalysts or a carbon silicon halogen combination which produces in situ acid catalysts or a different combination to produce an in situ base catalyst which replaces some of the molecules or atoms within the cellulose structure with silicon, boron or other hydrophobic or anti-degrading agents. Preferably an organic solvent, such as alcohol is used to accelerate the reaction with the water in the wood. Here, the hydroxyl (OH) group on some or all of the cellulose molecules is partially replaced with silicon or an alternative atom or molecule to changes the character of the wood. The process may be modified to insert a preliminary step of adding a reactive agent to be locked into the wood. Manufacturing techniques to enhance the process using ultrasound or other wave generating techniques are also taught.
