A composition for preparing a liquid-repellent surface includes a silicon-containing compound comprising units of the formula wherein R1, R2, R3, and R4 are defined herein. The composition further includes a multifunctional silane having at least two hydrolyzable groups, and an acid comprising a mineral acid, an organic acid, or a combination thereof. An article including a coating including the composition disposed on a surface of the article, and a method of preparing a liquid-repellent article are also disclosed.

The present invention is intended to provide an organosilicon compound for forming a novel organic thin film having improved physical properties. An organosilicon compound of the present invention is an organosilicon compound represented by formula (I) R—(CH2)n—SiX3 (I) (wherein R represents an alkoxy group having 1 to 3 carbon atoms or a phenyl group that optionally has a substituent, X represents a hydroxyl group or a hydrolyzable group, and n represents any integer from 17 to 24). An organic thin film can be formed by mixing the aforementioned organosilicon compound, a compound that can interact with the organosilicon compound, and water in an organic solvent to prepare an organic thin film forming solution, and bringing the organic thin film forming solution into contact with a substrate.

A method is disclosed for making a lithium-ion electrochemical cell comprising elements of the lithium-ion electrochemical cell contained within an aluminum alloy or magnesium alloy single-cell container. External surfaces of the container are coated for resistance to water-based corrosion. Rolled or folded layers of anode, cathode, and separator elements of the lithium-ion cell are placed in the aluminum or magnesium alloy container. And, with the placed elements of the lithium-ion cell in the container, and during one or more following steps of a manufacturing assembly process of the lithium-ion cell, an atmospheric pressure plasma stream, initially comprising hexamethyldisiloxane, is applied to external surfaces of the aluminum alloy or magnesium alloy container to form a silicone polymer coating on the surfaces that protects the container from water-based corrosion. The method is useful in forming batteries for automotive vehicles exposed to salt water environments.

The present invention also provides for use of the composition of the present invention to coat a substrate, as well as substrates coated with the composition of the present invention.

A substrate processing method includes the steps of cleaning a substrate in a processing tank, forming an organic solvent vapor atmosphere in a chamber, elevating the substrate to replace a rinse on a surface of the substrate with an organic solvent, draining the rinse from the processing tank, moving the substrate into the processing tank, making the surface of the substrate water-repellent, elevating the substrate and supplying an organic solvent vapor to the substrate to remove water repellent from the surface of the substrate, and drying the substrate with inert gas. The water repellent is removed above the processing tank, and thus the substrate can be dried while contamination of the substrate with particles that can be generated in the processing tank in this step is suppressed.
