A method of forming an optical fiber preform using, for example, an MCVD process, is modified to reduce the presence of hydrogen-induced transmission losses in an optical fiber drawn from the preform. A relatively porous, unsintered soot layer is first formed (similar to the initial soot layer commonly associated with the solution-doped process of the prior art) and then subjected to a flow of a metal halide (such as SiCl4) to reduce the presence of excess oxygen. It is imperative that the metal halide treatment occur in the absence of oxygen. Sintering of the treated layer, followed by a conventional collapsing process is then used to form the inventive preform. In accordance with the present invention, both the sintering and collapsing steps are performed in a non-oxygen based ambient. When the drawn fiber is then later exposed to hydrogen, the lack of oxygen thus eliminates the formation of Si—OH and the associated attenuation problems.

The method of providing a motor, includes providing a first thin-walled end cap having first inner and outer walls connected by a first integral side wall, the first outer wall defining a first terminal edge; providing a second thin-walled end cap having second inner and outer walls connected by a second integral side wall, the second outer wall defining a second terminal edge; providing a stator, having multiple parallel laminations defining an axially extending bore to receive a laminated rotor, the stator having end laminations, positioning the end caps so that the edges extend adjacent stator opposite end laminations.

A compact wall fastener (200) comprises pivotably connected proximal and distal sections where the proximal section has a through hole (205). The distal and proximal sections (220, 222, 235) preferably are flat. The distal section has a cam follower surface (251), a point (240), and a raised portion (250) that has the cam follower surface. The fastener is driven into a wallboard (600) until its proximal surface is parallel to the surface (605) of the wallboard. An activating pin or screw (615) is inserted into the entry of the fastener and forced into contact with the cam follower and then past the raised portion, forcing the distal section to bend, thereby causing the distal section to rotate downward until it is in contact with the inside surface (610) of the wallboard. The result is a secure fastener with minimal damage to the wallboard. In addition, the fastener can be used to fasten layers of delicate or easily displaced materials (1305, 1306, 1307). The fastener can be activated by a tool (1360) that applies the activating force to the fastener only, and not the material surrounding it.

This invention provides a system and method for attaching a trim cover to a flexible/resilient substrate, typically constructed from foam, which includes a plurality of clips that each has a base molded into the substrate. The bases each include a central “keyhole” slot that receives a corresponding key formed on a stem at a bottom of a clip projection. The clip projection defines a cavity for receiving a trim cover bead through a gap formed between a pair of legs that extend from the bottom. The stem has a length that is approximately the thickness of the slot. By passing the key through the slot and rotating the key to a locked position, the clip projection may be removably mounted to the substrate for repair or replacement as needed. The base may be constructed from a material that adheres effectively to the substrate, while the clip projection may be constructed from a material that exhibits high elasticity and wear-resistance. A cradle that includes a pair of upright posts that each confront a leg may be provided to progressively support the legs so as to prevent single point stresses from forming in the legs.

A hinge is mounted between a base and a screen of an electrical device and has a base panel, a guiding panel and a connecting member. The base panel is attached to the base and has a front surface. The guiding panel is mounted slidably on the front surface of the base panel and has a front surface and an arced slot. The connecting member is mounted slidably on the front surface of the guiding panel, is mounted securely on the screen panel and slides along the arced slot when in operation to allow users to slide and rotate the screen relative to the base.

An infant mattress includes a core and a cover. The core is made from a resilient material and has a top surface and a bottom surface. The top surface is inclined with respect to the bottom surface and includes a depression. The cover covers the core and includes a mesh-like material that forms an inclined hammock over the depression. The head and torso of an infant are placed on the hammock. One or more sidewalls of the depression may have one or more openings to facilitate air circulation within the depression cavity. The external ends of the openings may connect to an air or aerosol source to inject air or aerosols into the depression cavity. The core may be coated with an impermeable water-proofing layer.

Methods and apparatus for transferring patients are provided. A patient transfer device may have a wheeled base and a lateral transfer structure. A patient may lie supine on a patient support structure on top of a transfer sheet. Airbags may be adjusted beneath the transfer sheet to form channels. To transfer the patient from the patient support structure to the wheeled base, the lateral transfer structure is extended into the channels beneath the patient. A stretcher frame is formed from the extended lateral transfer structure. A stretcher that supports the patient is formed by attaching the transfer sheet to the stretcher frame. After the stretcher has been formed, the extended portions of the lateral transfer structure may be retracted to move the stretcher and patient on top of the wheeled base. The patient transfer device may be adjusted to allow the patient to assume a sitting position during transit.
