Abstract: Diazotisation of aromatic amines (I) in the solid state with nitrogen dioxide (NO2) comprises reacting (I) with NO2, in a gaseous or liquid state, in the presence of an inert diluent. Also claimed are methods of producing azo dyes by: (i) treating (I) with gaseous or liquid NO2 in the presence of a solid coupling component and an inert diluent; or (ii) reacting (I) with gaseous or liquid NO2 in the presence of an inert diluent and then reacting with a coupling component in a solid or liquid state, or in solution.

Abstract: The invention relates to trifluoromethyl-substituted azo dyes of formula (I), in which one of the R radicals represents NHR and the other R radical represents NR R , D is the radical of an aromatic or heteroaromatic diazo component; R is a C1-C10 alkyl, which may be interrupted by between 1 and 3 non-neighbouring oxygen atoms or 1 sulphur atom and substituted by hydroxy, C1-C4 alkanoyloxy, phenoxy, phenyl, phenyl carbonyl or cyano; R represents hydrogen, an R radical or phenyl which may be substituted by C1-C4 alkyl, C1-C4 alkoxy or halogen; R represents hydrogen or R and R independently of each other represent C1-C4 alkyl which may be interrupted by 1 oxygen atom; and A represents nitrogen or a binding link of the formula C-CN. The invention further relates to the use of said dyes for dying and printing textiles and to their intermediate products.
