Abstract: The invention relates to a method for producing formic acid by hydrogenation of carbon dioxide in the presence of a catalyst which contains an element of the 8th, 9th or 10th group of the periodic system, a tertiary amine and a polar solvent, at a pressure of 0.2 to 30 MPa abs and a temperature of 20 to 200°C, thereby producing two liquid phases, and separation of the two liquid phases. The liquid phase (B) enriched by the tertiary amine is returned to the hydrogenation reactor and the formic acid/amine addition product from the liquid phase (A) enriched by the formic acid/amine addition product and the polar solvent is thermally separated into free formic acid and free tertiary amine in a distillation unit and the tertiary amine released during separation and the polar solvent are returned to the hydrogenation reactor.

Abstract: The invention relates to a method for producing primary amines by means of the alcohol amination of alcohols with ammonia, with water being eliminated. The method comprises the steps of: (a) a homogenously-catalysed reaction of a reaction mixture which contains at least one alcohol, ammonia, at least one non-polar solvent, and at least one catalyst containing at least one element selected from groups 8, 9 and 10 of the periodic table in the liquid phase, a product mixture (P) thus being obtained; (b) separating the phases of product mixture (P) which was obtained in step (a), if necessary after a reduction in temperature, a reduction in pressure and/or the addition of at least one polar solvent with a miscibility gap in relation to the non-polar solvent, and thus obtaining at least one polar product phase (A) and at least one non-polar phase (B) containing at least one portion of the catalyst that was introduced, with said non-polar phase (B) being separated off, (c) returning at least one portion of the non-polar phase (B) into the reaction in step (a), and (d) separating the amination product from the polar product phase (A). The non-polar solvent introduced in (a) and the catalyst introduced in step (a) are selected such that the catalyst in the non-polar phase (B) becomes enriched.

Abstract: A process for preparing C9-alcohols comprises a) providing a C4-hydrocarbon stream comprising butene and butane; b) subjecting the C4-hydrocarbon stream to oligomerization over an olefin oligomerization catalyst and fractionating the resulting reaction mixture to give an octene-containing stream and a butene-depleted C4-hydrocarbon stream; c) subjecting the butene-depleted C4-hydrocarbon stream to steam reforming or partial oxidation to give carbon monoxide and hydrogen; d) hydroformylating the octene-containing stream by means of carbon monoxide and hydrogen in the presence of a hydroformylation catalyst to form C9-aldehydes, where the carbon monoxide used and/or the hydrogen used originate at least in part from step c); and e) catalytically hydrogenating the C9-aldehydes by means of hydrogen. In a variant of the process, part of the butenes present in the C4-hydrocarbon stream are hydroformylated to form C5-aldehydes, these are subjected to an aldol condensation and the product of the aldol condensation is hydrogenated to form C10-alcohols. The process allows the C4-hydrocarbon stream used to be substantially utilized as material.

Abstract: A process is proposed for preparing formic acid by reaction of carbon dioxide (1) with hydrogen (2) in a hydrogenation reactor (I) in the presence of a catalyst containing an element from group 8, 9 or 10 of the Periodic Table, of a tertiary amine containing at least 12 carbon atoms per molecule, and of a polar solvent comprising one or more monoalcohols selected from methanol, ethanol, propanols and butanols, to form formic acid/amine adducts as intermediates, which are subsequently cleaved thermally, the workup of the outputs (3) from the hydrogenation reactor (I) being performed with addition of water, and this increasing the partition coefficient of the catalyst between the upper phase (4) and the lower phase.

Abstract: The invention relates to a method for obtaining formic acid by the thermal separation of a flow containing formic acid and a tertiary amine (I), wherein a liquid flow which contains formic acid and a tertiary amine (I) in a molar ratio of 0.5 to 5 is produced by combining tertiary amine (I) and a source of formic acid, 10 to 100 wt % of the secondary components contained in said flow are separated, and formic acid is removed by distillation from the resulting liquid flow in a distillation device at a bottoms temperature of 100 to 300°C and a pressure of 30 to 3000 hPa abs, wherein the bottoms product from the distillation device is separated into two liquid phases and the upper liquid phase is returned to the source of formic acid and the lower liquid phase is returned for separation of the secondary components and/or to the distillation device.
