Abstract: The invention relates to a process for the production of foams by melting a thermoplastic, mixing the melt with a volatile blowing agent under a pressure of from 25 to 250 bar, decompressing the mixture to atmospheric pressure, and cooling the foam. The plastic employed is a copolymer comprising from 67 to 73 % by weight of alpha -methylstyrene and from 33 to 27 % by weight of acrylonitrile having a viscosity index of from 45 to 70 ml.g . The resultant foams of high heat distortion resistance can be used as insulating materials.

Abstract: A process for making ABS polymer particles comprising continuous polymerization of a mixture of at least one of each of (a) an aromatic vinyl monomer, and (b) an ethylenically unsaturated monomer in a weight ratio of (a):(b) of 90:10 to 10:90 in the presence of at least one of each of (c) a rubber-like polymer in an amount of 3 to 35 percent by weight relative to the total weight of the monomers (a) and (b), (d) a solvent, (e) a radical initiator and (f) an optional chain transfer agent. The process is carried out at temperatures between 80 DEG C. to 180 DEG C. in two or more reaction zones while the reaction mixture is stirred and while the monomers and solvents are removed in a degassing zone. The rubber-like polymer (c) has a solution viscosity of less than 80 mPa.s and a ratio of the solution viscosity of (c) to a percent of solvent expressed by 100[(d)/(a+b+c+d)] equal to or less than 2.5 mPa.s/percent of solvent.

Abstract: A thermoplastic moulding compsn. comprises an impact resistant styrene polymer (I) contg. a matrix with a wt. ave. mol. wt. (GPC) of greater than 270000 and a mol.wt. distribution of 3 or less and a polyphenylene ether (II). The compsn. comprises 5-90 pref. 20-80 wt.% (I) and 95-10 pref. 80-20 wt.% (II). (I) are prepd. by polymerisation of monovinyl aromatic monomers in the presence of a rubber. The amt. of rubber in (I) is 2-20 pref. 5-15 wt.%. (II) is esp. poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene)ether (IIA). The mouldings have low shrinkage and high impact resistance.

Abstract: Thermoplastic moulding compsn. comprises a copolymer (I) made impact resistant with a rubber (II) and which is prepd. by copolymerisation of a monovinyl aromatic cpd. with 2-12 wt.% (meth)acrylic acid deriv. in the presence of (II). The soft component content in the impact modified (I) is at least 28 wt.% (w.r.t. impact modified (I) and the tear strength of the compsn. is at least 5% above the corresponding tensile stress at yield (DIN53455). The particles of the disperse soft component phase in impact modified (I) have an an average dia. (wt. average) of at least 3.5 micron and the swelling index of the soft component in toluene is greater than 8.0. (I) is pref. prepd. from styrene and (meth)acrylic esters of 1-8C monoalcohols. (II) is e.g. polybutadiene, polyisoprene, their copolymers with styrene, EPDM etc. The compsn. has improved stress cracking resistance and good impact and solvent resistance flow. The compsn. can be used in food packaging and refrigerator parts.

Abstract: The monomers and opt. solvents and other polymerisation auxiliaries are charged continuously into a polymerisation zone and the liq. polymers are continuously discharged from the polymerisation zone. Volatile components are discharged from the gas compartment of the polymerisation zone, condensed and re-introduced into the polymerisation zone. Improvement comprises rinsing the surfaces defining the gas compartment of the polymerisation zone with the condensed constituents and opt. with the monomers to be charged to the polymerisation zone. Process can be used in styrene copolymerisation with (meth)acrylonitrile; in alpha-Me styrene and acrylonitrile copolymerisation and in styrene and acrylonitrile graft copolymerisation in the presence of elastomers. The formation of insoluble "popcorn" polymers on gas compartment walls is prevented.

Abstract: A process for the manufacture of high impact and translucent polystyrene, in which, in a first stage, styrene is prepolymerized in mass or in solution in the presence of a rubber, and the polymerization is then completed in mass, in solution or in aqueous suspension. The prepolymerization is taken to a stage where the amount of styrene converted is from 3 to 10 times the amount of the elastomer constituent of the rubber, and at this conversion the disperse soft-component phase formed should have a mean particle size of less than 1 mu m and should contain from 35 to 65% by weight of free or chemically bonded polystyrene segments. The translucent styrene polymers of high impact strength may be used for packaging purposes.

(b) next introducing (II) as a molten mase, soln. or dispersion in an upwards direction (b), and (c) allowing the major part of the volatile components to escape from the extruder by an orifice (8) placed vertically above the feed orifice (b) for (II). Process combines efficient removal of volatiles with rapid mixing, transport and extrusion of the prod. with low heat/energy ratio.
