    Abstract: Formic acid-formates are produced by (a) partial hydrolysis of methyl formate (MF) with water, (b) distillation to give (S1) formic acid and water, (c) conversion of the other product from (b) (mainly MF) into a stream (S2) containing formate and water by reaction with aqueous strong base and distillation of methanol, and (d) combination of (S1) with (S2). A method for the production of formic acid-formates (I) involves: (a) partial hydrolysis of methyl formate (MF) with water; (b) distillation to give a stream (S1) containing formic acid and water; (c) conversion of the MF- and possibly methanol-containing stream from (b) into a formate- and water-containing stream (S2) by (i) reaction with a basic compound of an acid with a pKa value of at least 3 in presence of water followed by (ii) removal of methanol by distillation; and (d) combination of streams (S1) and (S2). An Independent claim is also included for apparatus for the production of (I), comprising: (A) a reactor for the hydrolysis of MF; (B) a distillation column for separating a stream containing MF, formic acid, methanol and water; (C) a column for the hydrolysis of MF with a basic compound with removal of methanol by distillation (with an inlet for the base above the inlet for the product from (B)); and (D) a column connected to the bottom of (B) for removing water from the stream containing formic acid and water.

    Abstract: A process is proposed for preparing acid formates by providing a liquid stream I containing formic acid and a liquid stream II containing a metal formate, and mixing the liquid stream I with the liquid stream II, obtaining the corresponding acid formate, which comprises feeding, to the liquid stream I or a precursor thereof, to the liquid stream II or a precursor thereof, or to the mixture of the liquid streams I and II, a liquid stream III containing the following components at contents of in each case >0.1% by weight: metal formate, metal methoxide, methanol and MeFo (MeFo), which is produced in a process for preparing MeFo by carbonylating methanol in a reactor at a pressure up to 50 MPa absolute in the presence of a metal methoxide as homogeneous catalyst.

    Abstract: Process for distillatively separating a mixture containing a vinyl ether of the general formula (I) R1—O—CH═CH2  (I) and alcohol of the general formula (II) R2—OH  (II) in which R1 and R2 are each independently a saturated or unsaturated, aliphatic or cycloaliphatic radical having from 2 to 10 carbon atoms, and in which the alcohol (II) has a boiling point which is at least 1° C. higher, measured at or extrapolated to 0.1 MPa abs, than the vinyl ether (I), by a) passing the mixture into a first distillation column and withdrawing, as a top product, an azeotrope containing vinyl ether (I) and alcohol (II) and, as a bottom product, a stream enriched with the alcohol (II); b) passing the azeotrope containing vinyl ether (I) and alcohol (II) from the first distillation column into a second distillation column which is operated at a pressure which is from 0.01 to 3 MPa higher compared to the first distillation column, and withdrawing, as a bottom product or gaseous sidestream in the stripping section, the vinyl ether (I) and, as a top product, an azeotrope containing vinyl ether (I) and alcohol (II); and c) recycling the azeotrope containing vinyl ether (I) and alcohol (II) from the second distillation column into the first distillation column.
