Abstract: Prepn. of N-acylamino-carboxylic or sulphonic acids (I) or their alkali metal salts comprises (a) preparing a suspension of a solid, anhydrous alkali metal salt (II) of an aminocarboxylic or aminosulphonic acid in an alkyl carboxylate ester (III); (b) carrying out reaction to prepare an alkali metal salt of (I), by adding a catalytic amt. of strong base; and opt. Abstract: Prepn. of N-alkanoyl-polyhydroxyalkylamines of formula Z-N(R1)C(=O)R2 (I) comprises reacting polyhydroxyalkylamines of formula Z-NH-R1 (II) with alkyl esters of carboxylic acids of formula R3-O-C(=O)-R2 (III), in presence of a basic catalyst. In the prepn. of (a) the total amt. of (III) is heated to 90-130 deg.C and an aq. soln. of (II) is added, with the water introduced being continuously removed by distn. (b) the catalyst is added to the fine suspension of (II) in (III) and conversion to (I) is carried out at 70-100 deg.C with continuous removal by distn. of the alcohol, R3-OH formed and (c) conversion is in absence of organic solvents. In the formulae, Z = polyhydroxyalkyl residue of a mono- or oligo-saccharide; R1 = H or 1-8C alkyl; R2 = 1-21C alkyl; R3 = 1-4C alkyl. USE/ADVANTAGE - (I) are surfactants, used in washing and cleaning compsns. Colourless or light coloured prods. with a high (I) content and smaller amts. of starting materials and by-prods. are obtd. needing no further purification. Formation of clumps and deposits in the reactor is avoided, and the process can be used on the large scale.

Abstract: Production of alkyl glycosides by the conversion of aqueous glycoses with a water content of 10 to 80 wt % with aliphatic primary alcohols with 5 to 30 C atoms, in which: (a) the alcohols and the glycoses are used in the molar ratio of 2:1 to 10:1; (b) 0.1 to 5 wt % of the acid form of an anionic tenside in relation to the quantity of glycoses is used as an acid catalyst with emulsifying properties; (c) 1 to 30 wt % of alkylglycosides in relation to the quantity of glycoses used are employed as a further emulsifier; (d) the aqueous glycose is preheated to 50 to 90 DEG C and to the preheated aqueous solution of glycose are correctly dosed added and mixed thoroughly to produce a reaction mixture alcohol, acid catalyst and emulsifier in such a way that an emulsion is produced; (e) the conversion takes place at a temperature of 100 to 150 DEG C and a pressure of 10 to 100 mbar, whereby the water added to the reaction mixture and that produced by conversion is continuously distilled off; (f) after the reaction has been successfully conducted, the acid catalyst is neutralised by the addition of a base so that the resultant mixture has a pH of 8 to 10; whereupon (g) the excess alcohol is distilled off at a pressure of 0.01 to 10 mbar until the residual content is less than 5 wt % in relation to the quantity of alkyl glucoside, and (h) the reaction mixture is bleached with a compound separating the active oxygen after having been converted into an aqueous past with 30 to 70 wt % alkyl glucoside with a pH of 8 to 10.

Abstract: N-alkanoyl-polyhydroxyalkylamines having the formula (I), in which Z stands for the polyhydroxyalkyl residue of a mono- or oligo saccharide; R stands for hydrogen or C1-C8-alkyl and R stands for C1-C21-alkyl are prepared by reaction of polyhydroxyalkylamines having the formula (II): Z-NH-R , with carboxylic acid alkyl esters having the formula (III), in which R stands for a C1-C4-alkyl residue, in the presence of a basic catalyst. For that purpose, (a) the total amount of the ester (III) is taken, is heated up to the reaction temperature and the amine (II) is precisely added thereto as a molten mass while the reaction is in progress, the resulting alcohol represented by the formula R -OH being continuously distilled away; (b) the reaction is carried out at a temperature from 55 to 110 DEG C; and (c) the reaction is carried out in the absence of organic solvents.

Abstract: The preparation of alkyl glycosides by reaction of aqueous glycoses having a water content of 10 - 80% by weight with aliphatic primary alcohols having from 5 to 30 C atoms is described, in which (a) the alcohols and the glycoses are employed in a molar ratio of 2:1 to 10:1, (b) 0.1 - 5% by weight, based on the amount of the glycoses employed, of the acidic form of an anionic surfactant is used as the acidic catalyst having emulsifying properties, (c) 1 - 30% by weight, based on the amount of the glycoses employed, of alkyl glycosides is used as a further emulsifier, (d) the aqueous glycose is preheated to 50 - 90.degree.C and the preheated aqueous solution of the glycose is metered with effective mixing into the reaction mixture of alcohol, acidic catalyst and emulsifier in such a manner that an emulsion is formed, (e) the reaction is carried out at from 100 to 150.degree.C and from 10 to 100 mbar, the water introduced into the reaction mixture and the water formed by the reaction being continuously removed by distillation, (f) after the reaction has ended, the acidic catalyst is neutralized by addition of a base such that the resulting mixture has a pH of 8 - 10, then (g) the excess alcohol is removed by distillation at from 0.01 to 10 mbar down to a residual content of less than 5% by weight, based on the amount of alkyl glycoside present, and (h) the reaction mixture is bleached at pH 8 - 10 after conversion into an aqueous paste having a content of from 30 to 70% by weight of alkyl glycoside using a compound eliminating active oxygen.
