    Abstract: Water-soluble or dispersible graft copolymers having a K-value of 30-70 are claimed, which are obtained by radical polymerization of specified acrylate monomers and carboxyl group-containing vinyl monomers with a prepolymer having a K-value of 30-50 and containing at least 30 wt.% homopolymerized vinyl pyrrolidone (or ring expanded analogs). Water-soluble or dispersible graft copolymers having a K-value of 30-70 are claimed, which are obtained by radical polymerization of monomers (A) with a prepolymer (B) having a K-value of 30-50. Monomers (A) comprise (a) 50-85 wt.% monomers of formula CH2=CR'-CO-X-C(CH3)3 (I), (b) 15-30 wt.% of at least one carboxyl group-containing vinyl monomer and (c) 0-25 wt.% of a radical polymerizable vinyl monomer of formula CH2=CR'-CO-X-R (II). Prepolymer (B) contains at least 30 wt.% homopolymerized monomer of formula (III). The weight ratio of A:B is 100:5 to 100:200 and the graft copolymer is at least partially neutralized. X = O or NR''; R', R'' = H or 1-6C alkyl; R = 6-30C alkyl; n = 1-3. An Independent claim is included for a hair fixing preparation comprising 0.5-20 wt.% of the graft copolymer, 0-10 wt.% of a commercially available hair polymer, 50-99.5 wt.% of an alcohol and/or water, 0-50 wt.% of a propellant in the form of propane/butane and/or dimethyl ether, 0-0.5 wt.% of a water-soluble or dispersible silicone compound and 0-0.2 wt.% conventional additives.

    Abstract: Use is claimed as a rheological modifier for hair cosmetics of an ampholytic copolymer with a molar excess of anionogenic/anionic groups over cationogenic/cation groups or vice-versa, the copolymer being obtained by radical polymerization of specified unsaturated compounds optionally in presence of a silicon compound containing a polyether group and/or a radically polymerizable olefinically unsaturated double bond. Use is claimed as a rheological modifier for hair cosmetics of an ampholytic copolymer with a molar excess of anionogenic/anionic groups over cationogenic/cation groups or vice-versa, the copolymer being obtained (optionally in the presence of a silicon compound containing a polyether group and/or a radically polymerizable olefinically unsaturated double bond) by radical polymerization of (A) a compound with a radically polymerizable alpha ,beta -unsaturated double bond and an anionogenic and/or anionic group; (B) a compound like (a) but having cationgenic/cationic rather than anionogenic/anionic groups; and (C) a radically polymerizable crosslinking compound with >=2 alpha ,beta -unsaturated double bonds.
