Abstract: A method for refining iron oxide that comprises calcining the iron oxide at 700-1200 deg C, is new. Independent claims are included for: (a) iron oxide obtained by the process, containing less than 400 ppm residual chloride; (b) a catalyst prepared using iron oxide refined by calcination; and (c) the dehydration of ethylbenzene to styrene at 450-700 deg C and 0.1-5 bar, using a catalyst as in prepared in (b).

Abstract: Linear - trans - quinacridone - quinone and its 2 : 9-dihalo- and 2 : 9-dialkyl-derivatives are reduced using as reducing agents iron, copper, aluminium, nickel, zinc or an alloy or a mixture of the same in finely-divided form in the presence of (a) aqueous-alcoholic alkali metal hydroxide solution, (b) fused aluminium chloride, or (c) a mineral acid, any dihydroquinacridone obtained being subsequently oxidized. The use of copper or a copper alloy in the presence of a mineral acid is limited to the reduction of the unsubstituted quinacridonequinone. The products obtained are the corresponding linear-trans-quinacridones except when copper or a copper alloy and a mineral acid are used when the product is linear-trans-6-hydroxy-quinacridone. The invention also comprises linear-trans-6-hydroxy-quinacridone. Examples are given. Specifications 828,051, 828,052, 871,976, 896,803 and 911,881 are referred to.
