    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To easily obtain a highly concentrated aqueous solution of a low- molecular-weight homopolymer of N-vinylpyrrolidone by polymerizing N- vinylpyrrolidone in the presence of a polymerization modifier being a specified water-soluble compound and a H2 O2 initiator in an aqueous solution. SOLUTION: N-vinylpyrrolidone is polymerized in the presence of 0.1-30 wt.%, based on the N-vinylpyrrolidone, polymerization modifier selected from among 1-6C alkanols, hydroxylamine salts and water-soluble compounds containing sulfur in a combined form. The initiator H2 O2 is used in an amount of about 0.1-10 wt.% based on the amount of the N-vinylpyrrolidone. The polymerization modifier containing sulfur in a combined form is advantageously a mercapto compound, a dialkyl sulfide, a dialkyl disulfide and/or a dialkyl sulfide. The hydroxylamine salt used as the polymerization modifier is exemplified by hydroxylammonium sulfate. The polymerization modifier which can be particularly advantageously used is a 1-6C alkanol, especially ethanol, n- or iso- propanol.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a colorless and colorless cosmetic or medical composition easy to handle, containing (meth)acrylic ester (co)polymer(s) under specific conditions. SOLUTION: This cosmetic or medical composition contains at least one kind of polymer >=-35 deg.C in glass transition temperature containing =20wt.% of a (meth)acrylic ester and prepared by free radical emulsion polymerization or suspension polymerization in the presence of a chain transfer reagent, or copolymer(s) with a free radical- copolymerizable monomer. It is preferable that the (co)polymer is made from 40-100wt.% of a 1-30C (meth)acrylic ester, 0-30wt.% of a free radical- copolymerizable water-soluble monomer, 0-40wt.% of free radical- copolymerizable (meth)acrylamide, and 0-30wt.% of another free radical- polymerizable monomer. This composition can be used as a sunscreening preparation, cosmetic for caring for the body, face and hands or preparation for repelling insects, in the form of cream, lotion, milk, oil or gel.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a polyurethane usable as a hair setting agent, having excellently cleaning down properties (redispersibility), especially for a hair treatment composition. SOLUTION: This cross-linked water-soluble or water-dispersible polyurethane or its salt comprises (A) at least one water-soluble or water-dispersible polyurethane polymer containing a terminal isocyanate group composed of (a) at least one compound containing two active hydrogen atoms in one molecule and having 56-300 molecular weight, (b) at least one polymer containing two active hydrogen atoms in one molecule, (c) at least one compound containing at least two active hydrogen atoms in one molecule and at least one ionogen group or ionic group and (d) at least one diisocyanate and (B) at least one polymer containing a group reactive to an isocyanate group, selected from a hydroxy group, a primary and a secondary amino groups and/or carboxy group.
