Abstract: A process for producing long-shelf-life aqueous solutions of vinyl-amine-unit-containing polymers by the hydrolysis of N-vinyl-carbonamide-containing polymers with acids in an aqueous medium and removing the carboxylic acids separated from the polymers as esters from the aqueous polymer solution following hydrolysis and by the addition of at least stoichiometric quantities of at least one C1 to C6 alcohol and distilling the esters off from the reaction mixture. The invention also relates to the use of the long-shelf-life aqueous solutions of vinyl-amine-unit-containing polymers as dry and wet consolidating agents in paper manufacture.

Abstract: Graft polymers are obtainable by free radical polymerization of (A) monomers or monomer mixtures comprising (a) from 10 to 100% by weight of N-vinylcarboxamides of the formula (see formula I), where R1 and R2 are each H or C1-C6-alkyl, (b) from 0 to 90% by weight of other monoethylenically unsaturated monomers copolymerizable with the monomers (a) and (c) from 0 to 5% by weight of monomers having at least two ethylenically unsaturated, nonconjugated double bonds in the molecule in the presence of (B) polymers which contain at least 3 units of a C2-C4-alkylene oxide, and/or polytetrahydrofurans, in a weight ratio (A) : (B) of (95 to 10) : (5 to 90) , and, if required, subsequent elimination of some or all of the groups (see formula II) from the polymerized monomers (a) of the graft polymer with formation of units of the formula (see formula III) The graft polymers can be used as dry and wet strength agents, as fixing agents fear interfering substances and fillers, as retention aids and drainage aids in the production of paper and as promoters in the diketene sizing of paper, board and cardboard, as dispersants for pigments, as starch cationizing agents and as assistants in the production of tissue papers.

Abstract: Starch is cationically modified by reacting starch with polymers which contain amino and/or ammonium groups in an aqueous medium at from 115 to 180.degree.C under superatmospheric pressure in the absence of oxidizing agents, polymerization initiators and alkali, by a process in which the reaction is carried out in a manner such that a reduction in molecular weight occurs in not more than 10% by weight of the starch, and the reaction products thus obtainable are used as dry strength agents for paper.

Abstract: Aqueous sizing agent with high storage stability and concentration includes as anionic dispersant, a condensation product of a combination of naphthalene sulfonic acid, phenol, phenol sulfonic acid, formaldehyde and urea An aqueous, anionic sizing agent dispersion comprises a sizing agent based on alkyl diketenes, alkenyl succinic anhydrides and/or resin sizes in the presence of an anionic dispersant in water and comprising 0.05-10.0 wt.% of a condensation product from: (a) naphthalene sulfonic acid and formaldehyde; (b) phenol, phenol sulfonic acid and urea; (c) naphthalene sulfonic acid, formaldehyde and urea; (d) phenol, phenol sulfonic acid, formaldehyde and urea; and (e) an amphiphilic copolymer(s) from (i) hydrophobic monoethylenically unsaturated monomers; and (ii) monoethylenically unsaturated carboxylic, sulfonic and/or phosphonic acids. An Independent claim is also included for the preparation of the above dispersion by dispersing 0.05-10.0 wt.% of the above dispersant and the alkyl diketenes, alkenyl succinic anhydrides and/or resin sizes to give a 25-65 wt.% anionic dispersion, diluting with water and adding a cationic protective colloid.
