Abstract: The hydrogenation of esters of benzene-dicarboxylic acids is carried out on supported catalysts containing a Sub-Group VIIII metal on a macroporous support. A process for the hydrogenation of benzene-dicarboxylic acid ester(s) with hydrogen in presence of a supported catalyst containing Sub-Group VIII metal(s) on a macroporous support. If the ester is dimethyl terephthalate, this excludes hydrogenation on a catalyst containing ruthenium, with or without Sub-Group I, VII or VIII metal(s), on a support with an average pore diameter (APD) of at least 50 nm and a BET surface of not more than 30 m /g, with an active metal content of 0.01-30 wt.% and a ratio of (active metal surface):(support surface) of less than 0.05, and/or on a catalyst containing 0.01-30 wt.% active metal(s) as above on a support in which 10-50 vol.% of the pores consist of macropores with a diameter of 50-10,000 nm and 50-90 vol.% consist of mesopores with a diameter of 2-50 nm.

Abstract: The mixture described is a mixture of isomeric nonanol diesters of a dicarboxylic acid, selected from the class consisting of a mixture of diesters of adipic acid in the 1H NMR spectrum of which, observed in CDCl3, the ratio of the area under the resonance signals at chemical shifts in the range from 1.0 to 2.0 ppm with respect to TMS to the area under the resonance signals at chemical shifts in the range from 0.5 to 1.0 ppm with respect to TMS is from 1.20 to 5.00 and a mixture of diesters of phthalic acid, in the 1H NMR spectrum of which, observed in CDCl3, the ratio of the area under the resonance signals at chemical shifts in the range from 1.1 to 3.0 ppm with respect to TMS to the area under the resonance signals at chemical shifts in the range from 0.5 to 1.1 ppm with respect to TMS is from 1.00 to 4.00.The diesters of adipic and phthalic acid are suitable as plasticizers for PVC-based molding compositions and have high compatibility, a low cold crack temperature, low torsional rigidity and/or high thermal stability.

Abstract: Hydrogenation of benzene polycarboxylic acid(s) (or derivative(s)) with an H2-containing gas uses a catalyst which has a sub-Group VIII metal as active metal, alone or together with a sub-Group I or VII metal, on a carrier which is characterized by having macropores, there being provisos relating to the catalyst when dimethyl terephthalate is being hydrogenated. Hydrogenation of benzene polycarboxylic acid(s) (or derivative(s)) with an H2-containing gas uses a catalyst which has a sub-Group VIII metal as active metal, alone or together with a sub-Group I or VII metal, on a carrier which is characterized by having macropores, there being provisos when dimethyl terephthalate is being hydrogenated such that the following two types of catalysts are excluded : (i) a catalyst with Ru as the active metal, alone or together with a sub-Group I, VII or VIII metal, and which has (a) a carrier of average pore diameter at least 50nm and BET surface area at most 30m /g; (b) an active metal content of 0.01-30 wt.% of total catalyst wt.; and (c) a ratio active metal surface to carrier surface of below 0.05; and/or (ii) a catalyst with Ru as the active metal, alone or together with a sub-Group I, VII or VIII metal in an amount of 0.01-30 wt.% based on total catalyst wt., on a carrier having 10-50% of its pore volume of macropores of diameter 50-10,000nm and 50-90% of mesopores of diameter 2-50nm, the fractions of each type of pore adding up to 100%. An Independent claim is included for 9 novel cyclohexane-1,2-dicarboxylic acid esters.

In animal experiments, using rodents, to which a daily oral dose of 1000 mg/kg body weight of the corresponding cyclohexane polycarboxylic acid, or a derivative thereof, or a mixture of two or more of said acids is administered by oesophageal tube over a period of at least 14 days, said dose, in comparison to untreated control animals, leads neither to a significant increase in the weight of the liver after treatment, nor to a doubling of the specific cyanide-insensitive palmitoyl-CoA oxidase activity, measured in the liver homogenisate.
