    Abstract: Olefinic aldehydes were oxidized to olefinic acids such as methacrolein, acrolein to methacrylic acid acrylic acid, at 200-500≦̸C over mixed oxide catalysts contg. Mo, P, As and Cu. Thus, a 1:5.7:4.6:8.6 (molar) mixt. of methacrolein, air, N, and steam was passed at a 2-sec-residence time through a tube heated at 354≦̸C and contg. the mixed oxide catalyst on an Alundum support to give methacrylic acid in 93.8% yield.

    Abstract: Methacrolein and either methacrylonitrile or isobutylene were prepd. by ammoxidn. and dehydrogenation of methy1 tertBu ether or isobutylene dimer. Thus a slurry was prepd. from 1.29parts 85% H3PO4 and aq. solns. of NH4 heptamolybdate 47.5, Co(NH3)26H2O 29.4, Ni(NO3)26H2O 16.3, Fe(NO3)9H2O 27.2, Ni(NO3)35H2O 10.9, HNO31.5, and KNO3 0.16parts and 13.15 parts silica. The slurry was dried, calcined at 274-88≦̸C, mixed with 1% graphite, formed into tablets, and calcined 5 hr at 560≦̸C to give a catalyst of compn. 82.5% K0.07Ni2.5Co0.45Fe3Bip0.5Mo12O50-17.5% SiO2.

    Abstract: Acrylonitrile-indene copolymer(I) and acrylonitrile-coumarone copolymer contg. 50-90% acrylonitrile(II) having thermoplastic properties and can be readily thermoformed into containers with high heat-distorsion temp. Thus, I was prepd. 86% yield by stirring the mixt. of water 300, GAFAC RE-610 (emulsifier) 3, II 70, indene 30, n-dodecyl mercaptan 0.2 and K persulfate 0.3 wt. parts at 70OC for 16hr in N2 stream.

    Abstract: Methacrylic acid was prepd. by the oxidn of methacrolein by air at 288-371≦̸C over mixed oxide catalysts A0.05 Rb0.5 Mo3 P0.33 Ox (A= one or more of As, K, Ca, Cd, V, U, Ce, W, Ni, Zr, Ba, Fe, In, Tl, Rh, Sn, Mn, Re, Ru, Co or Cu; x=a no. detd. by the valence and nox. of other atoms present). Total conversion, signale pass yields and selectivities were 47.7-100, 13.6-69.5 and 28.5-82.1% resp.. Thus, with In0.05 Rb1.5 Mo3 P0.33 On at 243≦̸C, total conversion of aldehyde was 85.5%, with a signal pass yield of 62.0% and selectivity to methacrylic acid of 71.3%

    Abstract: Acrolein is oxidized to acrylic acid in the presence of an oxide of W, V, Mo, and optionally>=1 of Cu, Sn, and Ce, deposited as a thin layer on the surface or an inter particulate support of diameter >= 20 microns. Thus, 25g 10-30 mesh alundum was wetted 1.03cm3 water and tumbled with 6.25g W1.2 V3 Mo12 Ox catalyst powder to give a supported catalyst. Passing 1:10:6 acrolein-air-steam over the supported catalyst at heating bath temp. 260≦̸C and contact time 2.1 sec gave conversion 93.6%, acrylic acid selectivity 93.7% and yield 87.7%, and acetic acid yield 0%, with an exotherm of 9≦̸C.
