    Abstract: PURPOSE: An inverter fail detecting method for electric and hybrid vehicles is provided to prevent damage to parts caused by excessive current and short circuit through accurate detection of a fail. CONSTITUTION: A current sensor senses current applied from an inverter to a drive motor(S1). A comparator compares the sensed current with a reference value and detects a fail in a hardware manner(S11-S16). A CPU detects a fail using sensed current and a reference value set on software(S21-S26). The hardware and software fail detection processes are implemented at the same time. If the CPU detects a fail during one of the hardware and software fail detection processes, a fail of the inverter is finally determined.
