Abstract: A polymer micro-suspension (A) comprises: (A1) 10-55 wt.% of a graft core consisting of an elastomeric polymer having an average particle diameter of 0.08-100 microns and (B1) 45-90 wt.% of a graft sheath consisting of an organic polymer. Independent claims are included for: (i) a process for the production of (A) by dispersing the corresponding monomers for (A1) in water in the presence of a protective colloid to form a dispersing having an average particle diameter of 0.08-100 microns, polymerisation of the droplets with a radical polymerisation initiator to a conversion of greater than 50% and optionally graft polymerisation of the resulting mixture with monomers of (B1); (ii) a molding composition comprising 0.5-80 wt.% (A), 0-79.5 wt.% of (A') an ASA, ABS or AES-polymer, 20-99.5 wt.% of (B) polymer matrix, 0-50 wt.% of (C) fibrous or particulate filler and 0-50 wt.% of (D) further additives; and (iii) fibers, film or molded articles prepared from the molding composition.

Abstract: An elastomeric polymer microsuspension (A1) has an average particle diameter of 0.08-100 microns and comprises (A11) 10-100 wt.% monomers having a water solubility of less than 0.01% at 23 deg C (A12) 0-99 wt.% further copolymerizable monomers and (A13) 0-10 wt.% crosslinkable monomers. Independent claims are included for (i) a graft polymer micro-suspension (A) comprising 1-99.9 wt.% (A1) as the graft core and 0.1-99 wt.% (A2) - an organic polymer as a graft shell (ii) a process for the production of (A) by dispersing the corresponding monomers for (A1) in water in the presence of a protective colloid to form a dispersion having an average particle diameter of 0.08-100 microns, polymerisation of the droplets with a radical polymerisation initiator to a conversion of greater than 50% and optionally graft polymerisation of the resulting mixture with monomers of (A2). (iii) a molding composition comprising 1-85 wt.% graft polymer (A), 15-99 wt.% (B) a polymer matrix consisting of polymers of styrene, alpha -methylstyrene, acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile and/or (meth)acrylic acid ester, 0-50 wt.% (C) - fibrous and/or particulate fillers and 0-40 wt.% (D) - other additives. (iv) fibers, film or molded articles prepared from the molding composition.

Abstract: Graft copolymers are obtained by an aqueous- phase process in which polymerization of the rubber-elastic base is taken to completion and an N-oxyl radical compound of a sec. amine with no hydrogens on the alpha -carbon atom is added before and/or during polymerization of the grafted shell. A process for the production, in the aqueous phase, of graft copolymers (A) of (a1) 30-95 wt% rubber-elastic graft base derived from (a11) 50-100 wt% conjugated diene and (a12) 0-50 wt% other monounsaturated monomer(s) or from (a11 asterisk ) 50-100 wt% 1-10C alkyl acrylate, (a12 asterisk ) 0-10 wt% polyfunctional crosslinking monomer and (a13 asterisk ) 0-40 wt% other monounsaturated monomer(s) and (a2) 5-70 wt% grafted shell derived from (a21) 50-100 wt% styrene compound of formula (S): R , R = H or 1-8 C alkyl (a22) 0-40 wt% (meth)acrylonitrile and (a23) 0-40 wt% other monounsaturated monomer(s). In this process, polymerization of the base stage (a1) is taken to completion and then at least one N-oxyl radical compound of a sec. amine with no hydrogen atoms on the alpha -carbon atom is added before and/or during polymerization stage (a2). An Independent claim is also included for graft copolymers obtained by this process.

Abstract: A method of radical-initiated emulsion polymerisation for the production of aqueous polymer dispersions comprises emulsifying unsaturated monomer(s) in aqueous media with the aid of dispersants and then polymerising with a radical initiator in presence of a stable N-oxyl radical, at above 100 deg C and at a pressure above the vapour pressure of the reaction mixture. The initiators used comprise peroxides, hydroperoxides and/or azo compounds with a molal solubility at 25 deg C and 1 bar in water which is greater than or equal to that of tert.-butyl hydroperoxide and with a dissociation temperature of less than 100 deg C in the polymerisation mixture. Also claimed are aqueous polymer dispersions obtained by this process.
