    Abstract: A user, in order to design an application for a call handler 28 running on a remote server 10, runs a web browser to connect with a web page on the server, and requests (60, Figure 2) the application designer 32 from the server. The code for all the object representations is sent, either in the application designer applet, or separately from it, to the user PC 12, downloaded and executed. The user then designs (66) an application, using icons and a graphical palette (59, Figure 3), and the object representations. The completed application design is sent over the internet 14 to the server. An application builder 30, in the server, constructs the application 34, according to the application design 36, in stand-alone program code, and passes it to the call handler 28, for execution.

The digital signal processing board 180 is connected to trunk processor 135 via a time division multiplex (TDM) bus 165 and trunk adaptors 160. An application program is provided for controlling the processing of telephone calls and an application interface renders the location of said voice recognition resource 185 transparent to the application program.

    Abstract: The invention relates to a voice processing system capable of outputting voice prompts and background music. The volume of background music is progressively variable relative to the voice prompts or speech. The progressive variation is effected by multiplying the background music samples by a scaling factor and then adding together a current voice sample and the scaled background music sample. Accordingly, when the combined samples are output to the user the volume of the background music varies.

    Abstract: A voice processing system 30 is connected to a switch 20 via multiple telephone lines 25, and provides a set of line objects 335, each line object being associated with one of the physical telephone lines. The line object allows a demarcation to be made between the underlying voice processing system software 335, and external business applications 310. Thus a line object supports a set of methods such as Get DTMF Tone, Play Audio, Answer Call, and End Call, to allow the external business applications 310 to perform desired operations on a telephone line. These methods are invoked via a set of corresponding IVR action objects 320, which in turn are integrated into the business application. The business application itself, and its IVR actions, regard the line objects effectively as servers to provide IVR functionality. The business application may therefore run partially or completely on a separate physical machine from the IVR system itself.

    Abstract: A common requirement for a display adapter for multimedia applications is to be able to support two display "layers" simultaneously accessed from display memory. For each displayed pixel the two display layers are merged with various forms of mixing possible. The obvious way of displaying these two layers is to hold each layer in separate VRAMs and use the VRAM serial ports to access the two layers simultaneously. However, with the low resolution displays and small memory sizes required for personal computers it is not possible to keep the two layers in separate VRAMs, and so both data streams must be fetched from a single VRAM, or bank of VRAMs. With conventional VRAMs this cannot be efficiently achieved. By a novel enhancement to a conventional "Split Shift Register" VRAM, the disclosed invention allows both layers to be accessed simply and efficiently from the same memory device(s). The disclosed invention finds application in the field of semiconductor memory devices, in particular VRAMs and other similar memory devices. The disclosed use of memory devices according to the invention finds application in the field of, but not limited to, display memory subsystems.

    Abstract: A voice processing system comprises a computer workstation 80 running a voice system software and a telephony interface module 70 (connected with the network 30) which is attached via a trunk line 100 to a telephone switch 10. The computer system 80 and the telephony interface module 70 are connected by a standard data connection 230, such as a SCSI connection, over which voice data is exchanged. The SCSI interface is provided with a voice device driver capable of handling voice data by means of an appropriate set of commands. The interface 70 may be provided by the telephone switch (710), Fig. 7, (not shown). Other connections 230 could be ATM, FDDI or SSA.
