    Abstract: A shock absorbing device of a steering column is provided to differentiate shock absorbing degrees according to a diver's sex by judging the driver is male or female based on position of a driver's seat in a vehicle collision accident and to effectively protect both male and female drivers. A shock absorbing device of a steering column comprises a fluid chamber(6), a lower shaft(4), and a bypass path(7). The fluid chamber is formed at an upper shaft(3) mounted with a steering wheel. The lower shaft is formed with a piston(4a) to be moved in the fluid chamber and combined with the upper shaft to be relatively moved along the shaft. The bypass path is formed with an outlet opened/closed by the piston to bypass a fluid in the fluid chamber. The fluid chamber has an outflow hole(3a) and an oil pressure adjusting film(8). The outflow hole is for flowing inner fluid out. The oil pressure adjusting film opens/closes the outflow hole. The inner side of the oil pressure adjusting film has a spark plug and gunpowder. The gunpowder is exploded by the spark plug to destroy the oil pressure adjusting film. The spark plug is connected to receive control electric current through an airbag control unit(ACU). The airbag control unit judges supply/cutoff of the control electric current based on signals of a seat position sensor(9). Plural molding pins(5) are installed at a joint between the upper and lower shafts to be damaged when given over a predetermined level of impact.
