Abstract: The present invention relates to a method for producing impact-resistant modified styrene polymers, wherein said method comprises the anionic polymerisation of styrene in the presence of a rubber in one or more serially-mounted polymerisation reactors. The rubber is produced in the shape of a solution during a process carried out immediately upstream. The rubber solvent, which has a boiling point lower than that of the styrene or ethyl benzene, is removed by distillation with vaporisation cooling from at least one of said polymerisation reactors using the heat generated during the polymerisation process, and is further fed back to the rubber production step.

Abstract: The invention concerns a process for the anionic polymerization or copolymerization of vinyl aromatic compounds such as styrene in solution with an initial monomer concentration of between 40 and 100 wt.% under non-isothermic conditions, preferably in a pipe reactor or pipe assembly reactor, of which a substantial part is provided with means preventing the exchange of heat with the environment, toluene, methylcyclohexane, ethylbenzene or Decalin preferably being used as solvent. The temperature of the polymer solution leaving the reaction chamber is at least 170 DEG C. A styrene polymer containing fewer than 50 ppm monomers is produced.

Abstract: Continuous radical bulk polymerisation of vinyl monomers opt. contg. small amts. of solvent and/or initiator is such that: (a) the starting mixt. is fed to a stirred or circulating reactor (2) where it is converted to a polymer content of 45-65 (esp. 50-60) wt.% before being passed to an adiabatically operated tubular reactor (5) in which an approx. plug flow dominates, the polymer content being increased to 65-90 (esp. 70-85) wt.% in this reactor (5), with the monomer fraction at outlet (6) being at least 10 wt.%; and (b) the polymer prodn. in stirred reactor (2) is at least 1.5 times that in tubular reactor (5) and the polymer soln. leaving reactor (5) is degassed without further reaction. ADVANTAGE - Monomers such as styrene can be polymerised to high conversions with a high space-time yield.

Abstract: A process for the preparation of block copolymers of styrene or equivalents thereof on the one hand and of butadiene or equivalents thereof on the other hand by sequential anionic polymerisation, in which firstly one first monomer and the organometallic compound serving as initiator are combined to form a reaction mixture, and the reaction is continued until at least some of the first monomer has been consumed and at least one further monomer is then added and in each case reacted partly or fully, characterised in that the polymerisation is carried out continuously in a manner known per se in a tubular reactor, where the reaction of one monomer in each case is carried out in one reactor section (zone) in each case, and at least two reactor sections are separated by a mixing zone.
