Abstract: Process for the prepn. of a glycolide of formula (Ia) or lactides of formula (Ib) by heat-catalysed fission of condensation prods. of glycolic or alpha-hydroxypropionic acid whilst distilling off (Ia) or (Ib) from the reaction mixt., then converting the distillate into a solid phase and then washing the obtd. crude prod. with diethylether. USE/ADVANTAGE - (Ia) and (Ib) are starting materials for high mol. wt. polyglycolides or polylactides, useful as resorbable surgical stitching material. Use of diethylether to wash the crude prod. avoids the need for repeated crystallisation necessary for prior art solvents such as isopropanol, tert. amyl alcohol, carbon tetrachloride and ethyl acetate.

Abstract: Polymers (I) used as conditioning and hair-fixing gel formers in cosmetic formulations are obtained by (i) free radical-initiated copolymerisation of monomer mixtures of: (a) 1-99.9 wt.% optionally quaternised N-vinylimidazole, (b) 0-98.99 wt.% neutral or basic water-soluble monomer, (c) 0-49.99 wt.% unsaturated acid or anhydride, (d) 0-50 wt.% other comonomer and (e) 0.01-10 wt.% bi- or poly-functional comonomer, followed by (ii) quaternisation or protonisation of (I) is monomer (a) is not quaternised. Abstract: In selective dissolution of homo- or copolyoxymethylene (I), irradiated with actinic radiation, the liq. organic developer medium consists of a phenol deriv. (II) with free phenolic OH gps. and at least one other substit. in the phenol ring. Synchrotron radiation is used. To make micro-mouldings, (I) is irradiated selectively with actinic parallel radiation from x-ray sources in an erosion depth of 10-2000 microns with lateral dimensions to less than 10 microns and developed in (II). USE/ADVANTAGE - The process is used for making micro-mouldings with high aspect ratio (claimed). Cpds. of (II) type are less toxic than phenol, have less odour, are readily available and give structures of better quality.
