    Abstract: A novel Phillips catalyst for the homopolymerisation of ethylene and the copolymerisation of ethylene with alpha -olefins contains, as catalytically active components, a specific aluminium phosphate-supported chromium catalyst and cocatalysts of the general formulae I to IV MR M R2 M R 3-nXn MM RR@ (I) (II) (III) (IV> in which the index and variables have the following meanings: M is lithium, sodium or potassium, M is magnesium or zinc, M is boron or aluminium, R is C1- to C10-alkyl or C6- to C20-aryl, R is R or C1- to C10-alkoxy or C6- to C20-aryloxy, X is chlorine, bromine or iodine, N is 0, 1 or 2. The aluminium phosphate-supported chromium catalyst is obtainable by applying chromium compounds to a finely divided aluminium phosphate having a P:Al molar ratio of close or equal to 1 and a pore volume of > 1 cm /g, and activating the resulting intermediate at elevated temperatures in an oxidising atmosphere. The novel Phillips catalyst has an extremely long mean service life, and its productivity can be further increased by adding hydrogen.

    Abstract: Ethylene is polymerised, or copolymerised with minor amts. of 3-12C alpha-monoolefins, at 30-150 deg.C and 2-150 bar, in presence of a Phillips catalyst comprising (1) a supported catalyst comprising a carrier loaded with oxidic Cr, oxidic P and oxidic Al, and (2) a cocatalyst. (1) The supported catalyst is prepd. by (1.1) forming a catalyst pre-prod. by (1.1.1) in a 1st sub-stage, forming a suspension by mixing (1.1.1.1) 100 pts. of a silicate carrier with particle size 1-400 microns, pore vol. 0.5-3 cc/g and surface 100-1000 square m/g, with (1.1.1.2) 150-5000 pts. of an inert organic solvent, (1.1.2) in a 2nd sub-stage, combining 5-500 pts. of a solvent with (1.1.2.2) 1 pt. of Cr as Cr3+, and (1.1.2.3) 0.5-10 pts. of Al as AlR23, and (I) holding the mixt. at 0-100 deg.C for 5-300 mins., (1.1.3) in a 3rd sub-stage, combining 100 pts. of the carrier (1.1.1.1) as the suspension from (1.1.1) with (1.1.3.2) a cpd. of formula P(O)(OR3)3 or P(O)H(OR3)2, and (1.1.3.3) the prod. from sub-stage (1.1.2), to give 0.1-5 pts. of Cr and 0.5-10 pts. of P, and holding the mixt. at 0-60 deg.C for 5-300 mins., (1.1.4) in a 4th sub-stage evaporating to dryness at not above 150 deg.C, and opt. under reduced pressure, the suspension obtd. in sub-stage (1.1.3) and then (1.2) in a 2nd stage, converting the catalyst pre-prod. from (1.1) to the supported catalyst by (1.2.1) in a 1st sub-stage holding the pre-prod. in a dry N2 stream at 150-300 deg.C for 60-500 mins., (1.2.2) in a 2nd sub-stage, holding the intermediate from (1.2.1) in a dry gas stream contg. more than 10 vols. % of O2 at 300-900 deg.C for 10-1000 mins., and finally (1.2.3) in a 3rd sub-stage, holding the intermediate from (1.2.2) in a dry N2 stream at 50-400 deg.C for 10-300 mins.

    Abstract: Process for the preparation of a supported catalyst for the polymerisation of alpha -olefins, in which (1) a support gel containing silicon dioxide is prepared by (1.1) introducing a sodium or potassium waterglass solution into a rotating stream of an aqueous mineral acid both longitudinally and tangentially to the stream, spraying the silicic acid hydrosol thus formed in droplet form into a gaseous medium, allowing it to solidify into a hydrogel and freeing the hydrogel thus obtained of salt by washing without prior aging, (1.2) drying the hydrogel resulting from (1.1) to form the support gel, and (2) the support gel (1) is loaded with chromium trioxide or a chromium compound which can be converted into chromium trioxide under the conditions of the process step (3), which results in a chromium-containing support gel, and (3) the chromium-containing support gel (2) is heated in an anhydrous gas stream containing oxygen in a concentration of over 10% by volume for from 10 to 1000 minutes at from 400 to 1100 DEG C, the hydrogel resulting from the process step (1.1) being dried in the process step (1.2) over a time of not more than 60 seconds in a shaping flash dryer at an inlet temperature of from 80 to 400 DEG C .
