    Abstract: The present invention relates to a method for producing impact-resistant modified styrene polymers, wherein said method comprises the anionic polymerisation of styrene in the presence of a rubber in one or more serially-mounted polymerisation reactors. The rubber is produced in the shape of a solution during a process carried out immediately upstream. The rubber solvent, which has a boiling point lower than that of the styrene or ethyl benzene, is removed by distillation with vaporisation cooling from at least one of said polymerisation reactors using the heat generated during the polymerisation process, and is further fed back to the rubber production step.

    Abstract: Aq. polymer dispersions (X) are prepd. by radical aq. emulsion polymerisation of a mixt. contg. at least one gp. of ethylenic unsatd. radical polymerisable monomers. The mixt. comprises 30 - 90 wt.% monomers (A) with a min. solubility of 5 wt.% in water at the chosen polymerisation temp. and pressure (w.r.t. mixt.) and 10 - 70 wt.% monomers (B) with solubility in water less than 5 wt.% under the same conditions. The mixt. contains no surfactant monomers (C). Some or all of the emulsion polymerisation takes place in a dispersant medium comprising water and an organic solvent (S) whose solubility in water is max. 10 wt.% under the above conditions. The dispersant comprises at least 20 wt.% (S) and there is sufficient (S) present to form aq. and organic phases, but the water / (S) mass ratio is not greater than 1 : 2. Also claimed are (i) the prepn. of (X) by the above method; and (ii) oil-in-water emulsions contg. (D).

    Abstract: The invention concerns agglomerated finely divided cross-linked vinyl imidazole copolymers obtainable by radically initiated polymerisation of N-vinyl imidazoles of formula (I) in which R, R and R are identical or different and represent H, C1-C4 alkyl or phenyl, with at least one cross-linking agent, optionally with other water-soluble monoethylenically unsaturated monomers and optionally with water-insoluble monoethylenically unsaturated monomers, in the aqueous phase of a water-in-oil emulsion in the presence of at least one emulsifier made from block copolymers of the type AB or ABA or from comb copolymers built up from A and B, A being a hydrophobic polymer block with a molar mass of more than 500 g/mol and B a hydrophilic polymer block with a molar mass of more than 500 g /mol, for stabilising the water-in-oil-monomer emulsion; followed by azeotropic distillation of the water from the water-in-oil-polymer suspension emulsion and isolation of the polymers. The invention also concerns processes for producing these agglomerated finely divided cross-linked vinyl imidazole copolymers and the use of the copolymers as additives to washing products to prevent colour transfer during washing.
