    Abstract: The use of 4-oxo-retinol compounds (I) (including the free alcohol and ether, ester or carbonate derivatives) in cosmetic preparations is new. Some of (I) are new compounds. The use of 4-oxo-retinol compounds (I) in cosmetic preparations is new. [Image] R : H, 1-12C alkyl, 1-20C acyl, 1-12C alkoxycarbonyl, amino acid residue or tocopherol derivative residue of formula (i). [Image] Independent claims are included for: (1) cosmetic preparations for protecting the human epidermis or hair, comprising an effective amount of (I) in a carrier; and (2) (I; R = R') as new compounds. R' : 1-12C alkoxycarbonyl, amino acid residue or group (i). - ACTIVITY : Dermatological; antiseborrheic; antiinflammatory; antiallergic; immunosuppressive. - MECHANISM OF ACTION : Radical scavenger; antioxidant; regulation of collagen, hyaluronic acid or elastin synthesis; stimulation of DNA synthesis; regulation of transcription and translation of matrix-degrading enzymes (especially matrix metalloproteases); promotion of cellular renewal and regeneration of the skin; stimulation of intrinsic DNA, lipid and/or protein protection and repair mechanisms in the skin.

    Abstract: A solution of crude phosphonium salt is passed over a bed of a cation exchange resin in salt form. Subsequently, the cation exchange resin is washed with a solvent, and the phosphonium salt is eluted from the resin with an electrolyte solution, optionally in combination with a polar aprotic solvent.
