Abstract: A process for the manufacture of a titanium-containing component of a catalyst for the polymerization of monoolefins by the Ziegler-Natta method by milling (a) a particular titanium-containing compound, viz. a titanium trichloride/aluminum trichloride complex and (b) a particular ester with one another, in which process (1) a vibratory ball mill producing a particular milling acceleration is used, (2) the mill is first charged with the titanium-containing compound (a) and may or may not then be run for some time in the absence of diluents, (3) while milling, the ester (b) is added at a particular rate, continuously or in small portions, and in the absence of diluents, thereafter (4) the grist is brought to an elevated temperature, while milling, and is kept at this temperature until from 5 to 85% of the aluminum trichloride originally present in a bonded form in the titanium-containing compound (a) have been eliminated from the said compound (a), after which (5) if appropriate, the product obtained in accordance with (4) is washed with a hydrocarbon and dried, and then (6) the product obtained in accordance with (4) or in accordance with (5) is milled for a certain length of time at a low temperature in the absence of a diluent. Polyolefins of high stereoregularity can be obtained in a high specific yield by means of the catalyst component manufactured according to the invention.

Abstract: Reducing the proportion of particles with dia. below 200 m mu in finely divided polyolefins e.g. polyethylene, comprising particles with dia below 3.5 mm, comprises (1) suspending 1 pbe of the polyolefin, in 2-6 pbw of a water-sol, inert, liq. e.g. ethylene glycol; heating the resulting suspension to 2-6.5 degrees C below the melting range of the polymer, maintaining the suspension at that temp. for 5-30, the processing time being of a duration inversely proportional to the working temp; then (2) separating the so-treated polyolefin from the suspension medium; washing with water; and drying. Step (1) is effected under continuous stirring. The resulting dust-free prod. has improved flow characteristics and is free of voids giving mouldings free of cavities.

Abstract: Anti-slip coating for plastics films consists of a copolymer of 80-40 wt. % isobutylene and 20-60 wt. % styrene with a mol. wt. (Staudinger) of 2,000-8,000. The copolymers are sol. in most solvents and can be applied from soln. or from the melt. The coatings have good non-slip props. and do not become brittle at low temps. Treatment is esp. useful to make the stacking of full plastic bags easier.
